IOWA CITY, Iowa - After opening the Larry Wieczorek Invitational with three meet records crushed by freshmen, the Purdue track & field teams concluded the Invite with a total of 19 top-five finishes over two days, including nine on Day Two.
The newcomers continued their growing tradition of excellence as Boilermakers, having accounted for all three of Purdue's first-place finishes, including two contributed by freshmen.
Jah Strange, who owns the ninth-best triple jump distance in the nation, took home the first-place victory following his 51-02.25/15.60-meter mark on his fourth attempt.
Additionally, the men's short sprinters had a noteworthy day. The 60-meter dash saw four Boilermakers placed in the finals. Waseem Williams and Samson Colebrooke entered the premier finals after Williams ran the top prelims time (6.73 seconds) and Colebrooke the fourth-fastest. In the finals, both placed in the top four. Colebrooke secured second with a time of 6.73 seconds and Williams fourth with 6.75 seconds.
The men's 60-meter dash Olympic development finals saw two Boilermakers among the top finalists. Malcolm Dotson and Justin Becker notched a second and third-place respectively. Dotson, who crossed the finish line in 6.78 seconds, while Justin Becker shaved off 0.11 seconds off his PR to finish with a time of 6.85 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relays concluded with fourth-place finishes for both the men's and women's programs.
On Friday, Brittney Campbell won the women's 600-meter run with her meet-record time of 1:32.79. Distance runner Isabelle Sparreo also picked up her first collegiate victory with her 9:57.08 mark, also good to set a new meet record.
Purdue faced nine programs, including Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The men's eight competitors all ranked among the top 106 in the nation and included four teams in the top 26. Meanwhile, five women's programs were among the top 50 in the nation.
