WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue track & field team return to action this weekend with the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, hosted by Iowa. The two day meet Jan. 18 and 19 will feature nine programs, including Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.
The meet will begin Friday with the men's weight throw at 3 p.m. ET. In addition to the weight throw, the pole vault, high jump, long jump and the 600 and 200-meter dashes will take place. Saturday's events will begin at 2 p.m. with the closing 4x400-meter relay events tentatively scheduled to begin at 7:50 p.m.
Of the Boilermakers traveling, 17 set personal bests at the Gene Edmonds Invite last Saturday. Among them was freshman Amaya Chadwick, who earned her place in Purdue's 60-meter hurdles record book for the second time in as many meets as a Boilermaker. Chadwick ran an 8.50 second time for the 8th-fastest in Purdue history.
In the women's 400-meters, freshman Kyelah Hodges ranks 12th in the nation following a victory at the Gene Edmonds Invite with her time of 55.04 seconds. High jumper Janae' Moffitt ties No. 17 in the nation with a mark of 1.76 meters while All-American Sarah Loesch is sixth in the weight throw, having earned a 21.37 meter mark at the Hoosier Open in December.
The men enter the meet having produced four victories at the Gene Edmonds Invite. Samson Colebrooke (200-meter), Jordan Hollis (400-meter), Isaiah Martin (60-meter hurdles) and Waseem Williams (60-meter hurdles) each finished first in their event. Williams' time of 6.79 was just .01 seconds shy of becoming the 10th-fastest Boilermaker ever in the event.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Purdue men's team checks in at 60 in the preseason USTFCCCA national rankings, while the women are 49th. The men's eight competitors at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational all rank among the top 106 in the nation and include four teams in the top 26. Meanwhile, five women's programs are among the top 50 in the nation.
The first set of regular-season national rankings will be released next Monday.
THE BATTLE: 4X400-METER RELAYS
The men's 4x400 meter relay will be a clash of some of the top teams in the country. Of the teams competing, over half (55.6 percent) rank among the top-35 in the nation: No. 3 Baylor, No. 13 Arizona, No. 16 Iowa, No. 28 Purdue and No. 34 Iowa State.
The women's 4x400 meter race should prove to be a close battle with three teams in the top-20. Baylor leads with No. 13, followed by No. 15 Arizona and No. 19 Purdue. The Boilermakers own the 19th fastest women's relay time in the nation this season.
