WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue track & field indoor season ramps up Saturday with its first meet of the new year beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET. The Boilermaker hosted Gene Edmonds Open will be the debut of the newly-renovated Lambert Fieldhouse.
Six programs will join the Boilermakers in Lambert with Alabama State, IUPUI, Louisville, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame and Western Kentucky descending on Lambert.
The Boilermakers enter the weekend holding the fastest times in the 2018-19 indoor season in three events. With his time of 6.68 seconds, Samson Colebrooke broke the Hoosier Open meet record and earned the fourth-fastest time in Boilermaker history during his Purdue debut in the 60-meter dash. Brian Faust collected his first program record as a Boilermaker after snapping the 28 year-old 500-meter dash time with his 1:01.70 mark. Meanwhile on the women's side, Samara Miller holds the nation's top 500-meter dash time after crossing the finish line in 1:10.95. With the feat, Miller also became the fastest woman in Purdue history to do so.
In the men's triple jump, duo Jah Strange and Tamar Greene sit in second and third, respectively, in the nation. Strange recorded a mark of 15.77 meters while Greene was just a hair shy at 15.76 meters.
Purdue's women's 4x400 relay team also crack the top-10 in the nation with a 3:42.70 time, which stands as the seventh-fastest mark this season.
Additionally, All-American Sarah Loesch recorded a 21.37-meter weight throw mark to be ranked fourth nationally.
In the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason polls, the women's team checked in at 49 while the men were given the No. 60 nod.
The Gene Edmonds Open (24th-consecutive year) is named after the former Purdue throws coach and Hall of Fame official. For the first 18 years, the meet was a dual between Purdue and Indiana State, with the Gene Edmonds Cup presented to the winner. The Boilermakers won the trophy all 18 years.
Edmonds coached the Purdue throwers for eight years during the 1990s and mentored several elite student-athletes, including national champion Toyinda Smith. Edmonds also has been an official from youth to Olympic level and was inducted into the USATF National Officials Hall of Fame on Dec. 6. 2013.
Saturday's meet marks the first of two held in West Lafayette this season.
Free water bottles will be given away to fans while supplies last. Admissions is also free. Follow the action live on @PurdueSports Twitter.
