TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –The Purdue cross country team took home a pair of top-10 finishes at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Great Lakes Regional. Junior Jaret Carpenter led the No. 15-ranked men's team to a fourth-place finish with his victory in the men's 10,000-meter race, while the women secured eighth-place in the 6,000-meter run.
Carpenter registered first-place after taking the lead in the final stretch and crossing the finish line in just 31:09.6 minutes. With the victory, Carpenter is guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17, marking the seventh consecutive year a Boilermaker has advanced to the finals and the first time the men have sent a runner since 2016, when was when Carpenter last qualified.
Curt Eckstein also produced a top-10 finish. The sophomore received 8th-place with a time of 31:16.9, shaving off seven seconds from his time a year ago. Additionally, Brody Smith placed 27th in 31:45.9 minutes.
The men's fourth-place finish is the team's best in over 23 years. The performance picks up where the team left off a year ago, when it earned fifth.
Five Boilermakers (71 percent) placed in the top-45 on the men's side. The Purdue men's team faced a field of 30 teams and 267 individual competitors including No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 23 Indiana and No. 27 Michigan.
The men's team earned 121 points to finish behind Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Michigan while the women notched 280 points.
The Purdue women's team entered the competition No. 10 in the Great Lakes Region. Emma Benner paced the Boilermakers with her time of 21:09.1 and 31st-place. Jenna Halderman and Rachel Yuska followed in 49th and 55th, respectively.
The women's program placed all seven runners among the first 93 past the finish line, while 305 individual competitors were registered.
All selections for the NCAA Championships will be announced Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
