Scoring Breakdown /// Complete Meet Results: Swimmers at Iowa / Divers at Texas
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Highlighted by three event victories, Purdue men's swimming & diving posted 13 top-three finishes while performing well at its fall invitational meets in Austin and Iowa City.
Even with the team competing in two different meets, the Purdue swimmers still managed to win the nine-team Hawkeye Invitational. The divers finished second in the team scoring at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational, just two points behind LSU.
The Boilermakers won a multi-day invitational meet on the road for the first time since November 2001 at Northwestern. Despite only A and B finalists accounting for team points at Iowa's meet, 28 Purdue student-athletes still managed to score in at least one individual event.
Brandon Loschiavo (platform diving), Brett Riley (400 IM) and Joe Young (100 fly) accounted for Purdue's event victories. Eight other Boilermakers contributed to the team's 13 total top-three showings. Kiki Komlenic (2nd in 100 back, 3rd in 200 back) and Grant Lewis (2nd in 200 fly, 3rd in 400 IM) both accounted for a pair of medalist-equivalent finishes.
Erik Juliusson and Riley both scored in four individual events at the Hawkeye Invitational to rank 1-2 on the team in scoring. Juliusson was an A finalist in all four events, demonstrating his versatility with top-eight showings in the 100 back, 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM. The senior also swam on three scoring relays. Riley logged some heavy yardage while competing in the 200 breast, 400 IM, 500 free and the mile. He finished among the top 10 in three of the events.
Trent Pellini would have scored in four events as well, but was not allowed to race in the A final of the 200 breast Saturday. He competed in the prelims of the 50 free, 200 IM, 100 breast and 100 fly over the first two days. Even though he was scratched from the C final of the 50 free, student-athletes were capped at a maximum four individual events at the meet. He was still permitted to race in the non-scoring D final of the 200 breast and the Purdue season-best time (2:01.36) he posted in the event still counts.
Nikola Acin (43.53) eclipsed the program's freshman record in the 100 free that had stood since 2011. He was an A finalist in all three of his individual events and accounted for team season-best times in the 50, 100 and 200 free.
Senior James Boone raced as part of scoring teams in all five relays, anchoring Purdue's top teams in all three freestyle races as well as the 400 medley. He teamed with Nikola Bjelajac, Gabi Gomez Treig and Acin to post the second-fastest time (2:54.07) in program history in the 400 free relay. Acin, Gomez Treig and Pellini joined Juliusson as Boilermakers that were part of four scoring relays.
Ben Bramley and Greg Duncan teamed up to give the Boilermakers two of the top three finishers in 3-meter diving at Texas. Purdue had a top-eight finalist in all three events at the prestigious meet.
Purdue's next full meet is Jan. 11 at Michigan State. The divers are slated to compete at the USA Diving Winter Trials in Atlanta the week of Dec. 16 to 21. After flying to Hawaii last year and having scheduled a training trip to South Florida next year, the Boilermakers will be staying on campus for their winter training camp this season.
