WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Joe Cifelli's runner-up finish in 3-meter diving highlighted the night for the Boilermakers as the Big Ten teams both took leads in the team scoring after the first of two sessions of the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Swimming & Diving Challenge at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Big Ten women won eight of the nine events Saturday, posting four 1-2-3 finishes to build a sizable 123-44 lead. The Big Ten had the top three finishers in the in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle plus the top four finishers in the 200 breaststroke and platform diving.
The men's side of the team scoring was much more competitive. The ACC won the first four events of the night but the Big Ten was victorious in the final five, leading to an 85-82 edge for the Big Ten.
There are 10 more events on the schedule for Sunday. Action begins at 10 a.m. ET live on Big Ten Network.
Cifelli posted a Purdue season-best score of 405.70 on 3-meter. He and Indiana's James Connor (429.35), an Olympian for Australia in 2016, teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the event. It was a key showing in the final individual event of the night, allowing the Big Ten to match the ACC's 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke. Those were the only such finishes on the men's half of the meet.
Joe Young (47.85 in 100 fly, 48.18 in 100 back) and Maizie Seidl (1:48.53 in 200 free) also accounted for Purdue season bests Saturday. They both did so on the opening leg of a relay.
Pool records were established in a pair of women's events. Michigan freshman Maggie MacNeil was part of both records. She won the 100 butterfly in 50.09, posting the top time in the nation so far this season and eclipsing a pool benchmark from the 2017 Big Ten Championships. The opening event of the night also produced a pool record. MacNeil teamed with Wisconsin's Beata Nelson, Indiana's Lilly King and Michigan's Siobhan Haughey to post a winning time of 3:25.71 in the 400 medley relay, also eclipsing a mark from Big Tens two seasons ago.
Emily Bretscher joined Cifelli and Young as Boilermakers to compete in an individual event Saturday. In her first platform diving competition of the season, Bretscher placed sixth with a score of 252.25. She helped the Big Ten account for six of the top seven finishers in the event. Young posted his Purdue season-best time of 47.85 while racing individually in the 100 fly.
Megan Johnson, Gretta DeCoursey, Taite Kitchel and Seidl had an opportunity to compete together as an all-Purdue 800 free relay team. They posted a time of 7:15.54, good for 10th place in program history. Trent Pellini and Young both raced among the same quartet in the 400 medley relay. Brandon Loschiavo (platform), Nick McDowell (1,000 free), Morgan Meixner (3-meter), Jinq En Phee (100 breast), Kitchel (200 fly), Pellini (100 breast) and Young (100 back) are all slated to compete in individual events Sunday.
