THE MONON SPIKE
The rivalry between Purdue and Indiana on the volleyball court began in 1975. In 1981, a little incentive was added to the series with the creation of the Monon Spike traveling trophy, which is presented to the winning team after one of the two annual matches. The Spike match alternates locations each season.

The trophy idea was the brain child of Donna Hardesty and Anne McMenamy, seniors on the 1981 Purdue team. They chose the Spike from the Monon Railroad, which originated in Indiana the late 19th century, to be a reminder of the competition on the court as well as the tradition of the state of Indiana.

As with its sister trophies, the Old Oaken Bucket (football) and the Golden Boot (soccer), a "P" or an "I" link is added to the chain signifying the season's winner. The Spike currently has 32 "P" links and 12 "I" links.

SERIES INFORMATION
Purdue owns a 66-34 all-time record against Indiana since winning the first two meetings in the series, which began on Oct. 4, 1975. Indiana claimed eight of the next nine matches until Purdue launched a 24-match win streak on Sept. 20, 1978, which lasted through the end of the 1985 season. The teams split the next 14 matches. The Hoosiers took 16 of the next 21 contests from 1992 to 2002. The Boilermakers have won 11 straight since 2008, including season sweeps in 2008 and 2010-2017.

SCOUTING INDIANA
Coming off a win against No. 14 Michigan on Wednesday, Indiana enters Saturday's showdown with an overall record of 15-9 and a mark of 6-7 in Big Ten matches. In the victory, the Hoosiers were led by freshman Breana Edwards with 16 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Overall, the rookie leads the Indiana Hoosiers in kills with 265. The number represents the most for an Indiana freshman since Jordan Haverly set the freshman program record with 446 in 2009. On the defensive side, the Hoosiers have totaled 249.5 team blocks and 92 solo blocks through 23 matches, including 10 or more blocks in 14 matches this season. Deyshia Lofton guides Indiana in blocks with 109. Lofton ranks sixth in the Big Ten in blocks per set at 1.18 and leads the Hoosiers in hitting percentage at .352 on the season.

LAST MEETING VS. THE HOOSIERS
Last season, then-No. 19 Purdue defeated Indiana in three sets (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) to claim the Monon Spike for the 10th straight year* and earn its second sweep of the Hoosiers in four days. Danielle Cuttino and Sherridan Atkinson led the Boilermakers with double-digit kill efforts and hitting percentages north of .400 to fuel Purdue's .366 hitting percentage on the night. Cuttino registered 14 kills on 28 swings with just one error to hit .464, while Atkinson tallied 11 kills with three errors on 19 attempts to earn a .421 hitting percentage. Blake Mohler hit .375 with five kills to go along with six blocks. Purdue out-blocked IU 8-1 in the contest.

*Purdue and Indiana match up twice a year, but the Monon Spike is only given out at one of the matches, alternating between West Lafayette and Bloomington each year.
