WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A two-run suicide squeeze bunt accounted for the only runs in the planned five-inning opener of Purdue baseball's Old Gold & Black Series, won by the Gold Team 2-0.
With one out in the fifth inning, freshman Brett Bass got the bunt down on the first pitch of his at-bat. Justin Fugitt and Blake Schmitt were both aboard after consecutive four-pitch walks to open the frame. Pitcher Tylon Ross retired Bass at first but Schmitt never stopped running, scoring from second base on the play.
Purdue also scored twice on a squeeze bunt in a series-opening win vs. Rutgers at Alexander Field in April 2018. Current sophomore Tyler Powers executed the bunt that night.
Freshman right-handers Austin Peterson and Grant Brunt combined for 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball as the starting pitchers. Conner Tomasic moved from shortstop to the mound in the bottom of the fifth and closed out the win with a 1-2-3 inning vs. the 3-4-5 portion of the lineup.
Peterson retired 11 of the 14 batters he faced over four innings, surrendering only a one-out single in top of the second. He ended his outing by picking off a runner at second base, erasing the lone unintentional walk he issued. Peterson struck four and worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
Brunt stranded runners on second and third base in both the first and third innings. He also retired seven of eight batters from the first through third innings. Trevor Cheaney escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth after consecutive two-out singles by freshmen Luke Houin and Tanner Haston.
Cole McKenzie and Seth Gergely both recorded leadoff singles against Brunt.
The Boilermakers (Gold Team) won three skins in the series opener, one for the fifth inning and two for the game result. Because the three-game series won't feature the full 27 innings, the coaching staff opted to install a skins format to put more on the line over the course of the intrasquad.
The Old Gold & Black Series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. It is open to the public at Alexander Field.
