WILMETTE, Ill. - The Purdue women's golf team opened the 2018-19 season Monday, playing the first 36 holes of the 2018 Windy City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Northwestern at Westmoreland Country Club. The Boilermakers shot 23-over par over the opening two rounds and sit tied for eighth in the team standings with ninth-ranked South Carolina as junior Micaela Farah paced the squad at two-under par, 73-69=142.
Farah was fairly steady through her first two rounds of the season, sinking par on 26-of-36 holes. She sank two birdies in the opening round on her way to a score of one-over 73, and dropped four more over the second 18 holes as she became the first Boilermaker to shoot in the 60's on the season at three-under 69. She was pristine on the back nine, scoring five of her birdies on that side, including three straight on 15, 16 and 17 in the second round.
"Mica played very solid on an excellent golf course with strong putting," said Boilermaker head coach Devon Brouse. "With another round like today's and some more support from her teammates, we can make a move up the leaderboard."
In the opening round, Farah was backed by freshmen RuQing Guan and Danielle du Toit and sophomore Lauren Guiao on the team scoreboard. Guan shot three-over 75, while du Toit and Guiao were five- and six-over par, respectively. Junior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri rebounded from a tough opening 18 to shoot two-over 74 in the second round, and made four birdies. Guan matched her opening round with another 75, while du Toit and Guiao tied for the final team mark at six-over 78. Guan is the Boilermakers' No. 2 individual on the leaderboard, tied for 33rd, overcoming a tough start to shoot just one-over par over her final 33 holes of the day, including a quartet of birdies.
Arizona holds the overall team lead after two rounds at one-under par, 289-286=575, holding a one-stroke lead on USC. The Trojans' Gabriela Ruffels sits at the top of the individual leaderboard at nine-under par, including a second-round, six-under 66.
The Boilermakers aim to make their final moves tomorrow, and will go off on a shotgun start with South Carolina and Ohio State at 8:30 a.m. ET.
