Second-Half Goal Dispatches Soccer

The Purdue women's soccer team fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Thursday 2-1.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's soccer team fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Thursday 2-1. The Boilermakers (6-7-4, 1-6-3 B1G) answered Ohio State's first goal of the night in the 50th minute, but were unable to keep OSU from responding with another goal in the 66th minute.

Purdue's action-filled second half concluded with five shots and four corner kicks in the last 10 minutes of play, but Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr produced the necessary saves to keep Purdue from finding the equalizer.

Ohio State sought an early lead, recording the team's first goal in the fifth minute of play. The slow-moving shot from Kayla Fischer slid by a diving Katie Luce, off the goal post and in, despite Purdue's possession in the early minutes.

The second half was filled with high-intensity play between the Boilermakers and Buckeyes, highlighted by Purdue's 13 shots.

Sydney Duarte recorded Purdue's goal in the 50th minute. Hannah Melchiorre and Teagan Jones earned assists on the play, as Melchiorre sent the pass in from the right corner, where Jones was just able to get the light touch to send it in Duarte's direction.

Duarte's goal marked the second of her career and the first time she's scored during Big Ten play.

Ohio State responded 15 minutes later with another goal by Fischer in the 66th minute.

Purdue closed out the game, not allowing a single Ohio State shot in the last 13 minutes of play.

Duarte posted another formidable opportunity with 11 minutes left on the clock. The Lake Forest, California native took a touch in towards the 18-yard line, but the OSU defense converged and was able to block Duarte from getting the shot off.

In the 85th minute, Purdue was called offside as the Boilermakers leading scorer, Kylie Hase, netted the ball, throwing fans in an uproar. Just minutes later, Hase landed another shot on-frame, but the Ohio State keeper registered the save.

In the final seconds, Purdue earned a free kick 30 yards out, followed by a corner kick with just 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Skylurr Patrick recorded a team-high four shots while all three of Hase's shots landed on-goal.

The Boilermakers out-shot the Buckeyes 16-7 and forced six saves in the final game at Folk Field this season.
