West Lafayette, Ind. – The Purdue women's soccer team secured its fifth victory of the season with its 2-0 win over Western Michigan.
With the program's third shutout of the year, the Boilermakers extend their unbeaten streak at Folk Field to six consecutive games and will enter Big Ten play with a 5-1-1 (.786) record.
The Boilermakers ended their first half scoring drought in the 20th minute when Aly Mielke produced the game-winner, as well as the first goal of her collegiate career. Mielke scored during a corner kick attempt. Fellow freshman Sydney Duarte was the first to get a shot off, but the ball ricocheted off a defender and Skylurr Patrick was able to get the touch out to Mielke for the shot.
Kylie Hase netted the insurance goal during the 62nd minute. The sophomore buried the ball in the net during another corner kick opportunity. Hase missed the header on the near post, but was able to tap it in when the ball came down in front of her. Hase recorded her fifth goal of the season on her birthday.
The Clark and Hase pair has proved to be a volatile combination for Purdue, as the combination of Clark to Hase has accounted for four of the team's last eight goals.
Purdue's 17 shots were the second-most by the Boilermakers this year and the first time Purdue has outshot its opponent since playing Iowa State at home (8/26). Freshman Sydney Duarte led the Boilermakers with four shots.
Marisa Bova made her second career start in as many games in goal. The keeper produced three saves in the second half on her way to her first collegiate shutout and a 2-0 record in goal.
Defender Grace Walsh held the Purdue back line for the full 90 minutes, joining Bova as the only two Boilermakers on the pitch for the full game.
