Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series / Marmeeting
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four podium finishes on the tour plus a victory at the 32nd Marmeeting headlined a second-place showing on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series for Purdue alumnus Steven LoBue.
The career-best overall finish for LoBue (2004-07) also marked the fifth time he's finished among the top five in the final standings since joining the tour in 2011. He was victorious in consecutive tour events in Spain (June 30) and Portugal (July 14) this summer. He was also the runner-up in Denmark (Aug. 25) and Italy (Sept. 23). Seven-time Cliff Diving World Series champion Gary Hunt of the United Kingdom rallied to win the title with victories in each of the last four tour stops.
Fellow Purdue alumni David Colturi (2008-10) and Kyle Mitrione (2007-10) also competed on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series again this year.
LoBue and Colturi both finished on the podium at the tour stops in Bilbao, Spain and the Azores off the coast of Portugal. Colturi placed ninth in the final standings after an injury prevented him from competing during the final four tour stops. Mitrione was a wild card entry at stops in Texas and Denmark and also competed at the Marmeeting in Italy.
Competitive cliff diving is traditionally contested at approximately 27 meters (88 feet) while entering the water feet first.
LoBue's victory in Italy the first weekend of September came in his seventh career appearance at the 32nd edition of the Marmeeting Mediterranean Cup, which is an independent event from the Red Bull tour.
"I had never finished better than third place and I'm happy to have finally achieved the victory," LoBue said of his Marmeeting win. "The weather conditions made the competition more complex, with fairly high waves. But the beauty of our sport is having to adapt to all the difficulties."
While winning silver in Portugal, Colturi posted a single-dive scoring record at the time. LoBue ended up winning the event by less than a point, 405.35 to 404.8, over his fellow Boilermaker. LoBue also exceeded 400 points during his podium finishes in Spain (416.15, 1st), Denmark (431.8, 2nd) and Italy (406.05, 2nd). LoBue was featuring a five-somersault dive in his list this season.
In previous seasons, a top-10 finish on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series assured a diver of a regular place on the tour for the following year.
LoBue was named FINA's Best Male High Diver of 2017. While competing from 27 meters, he won gold at the FINA World Championships and silver at the FINA High Diving World Cup last year.
