COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Boilermakers suffered its first loss of the season to No. 15 South Carolina, 2-1. Kylie Hase recorded Purdue's only goal in the 89th minute, but the late score was not enough to overcome the two goal deficit.
This marks Purdue's first loss to a top-25 ranked team since the 0-1 loss at No. 16 Penn State on Oct. 16, 2016.
Purdue's defense saw much of the action in Sunday's game, facing 17 shots, including eight on goal during the contest. Purdue entered halftime scoreless despite 10 shots and five saves by Katie Luce.
The Boilermakers were upended in the second half with No. 15 South Carolina's first goal in the 68th minute by Jyllissa Harris, who netted the ball from the top of the box. The Gamecocks followed up in the 82nd minute when Elexa Bahr connected on a header off a corner kick.
Purdue picked up five shots in the second half, including a team-high two by Sydney Duarte. Hase earned the team's lone shot on goal, which she converted on. The ball was served by Sarah Clark, which Hase was then able to dribble around the South Carolina goalkeeper Mika Krzeczowski to place in the net.
This marked the third straight game Hase scored for the Boilermakers and the second of the season coming in the final two minutes of play on an assist from Clark.
Of Purdue's eight goals this year, the last seven were netted during the second half (.875 percent).
The back line of Hannah Mussallem, Skylurr Patrick, Grace Walsh and Julia Ware, along with keeper Luce all logged the full 90 minutes.
