West Lafayette, Ind. – After 110 minutes of action in the Big Ten opener, the Purdue women's soccer team recorded a 2-2 draw against the Michigan State Spartans.
Purdue was able to answer each of Michigan State's goals with one of its own. Ena Sabanagic recorded the team's first goal while Kylie Hase sent the match to extra minutes after scoring in the last four minutes of regulation.
With Hase's equalizer in the 87th minute, the sophomore became the program's leading consecutive game scorer. Hase has notched a goal in six straight games, more than any other student-athlete in Purdue soccer history.
Sabanagic netted Purdue's first of the game in the 37th minute on an assist from Hannah Melchiorre. Sabanagic was posted up at the near right post as the ball was served low into the box. Despite being well-defended, the junior who scored her first collegiate goal last Thursday against No. 24 Louisville, was determined to earn her second.
The Boilermakers outshot the Spartans 30-13 in the stalemate, which set a program-best since the 2014 squad tallied 32 versus MSU. Furthermore, it was just the second time Purdue has opened the conference season with an overtime battle, with both games occurring against Michigan State (last, 2012).
Purdue held possession for a large majority of the game. Both goals scored by Michigan State came during breakaway opportunities. Freshman Marisa Bova made a diving stop in what was arguably the visitor's best overtime scoring opportunity. Bova's after a free kick led the Spartans to taking a shot just feet away from the goal line in what was arguably Michigan State's best extra minutes opportunity. During the second overtime, the Boilermakers outshot the Spartans 4-0.
Eight freshman took the field to start the game. Five Boilermakers saw action for the full game – Bova, Sydney Duarte, Hannah Mussallem, Skylurr Patrick, Grace Walsh and Julia Ware.
Hase and Sabanagic led the team with four shots apiece, while Sabanagic sent four on frame for a team-best.
