WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue class of 2018 graduate Gergely Madarász has been heating up during summer's clay court season on the ITF Futures Circuit in his native Hungary.

Madarász most recently reached the quarterfinals in singles and doubles at the Budapest Open last weekend.

The All-Big Ten First Team member breezed through three matches in the singles qualifying draw to reach the round of 32 where he disposed of the world's Nos. 652 and 459 players. In doubles, Madarász partnered with countryman Peter Balla, ousting Romania's Dragos Rima and Mircea-Alexandru Jecan before falling to the top-300 team of Brazil's Rafael Matos and Marcelo Zormann.

"Before his time at Purdue, he didn't play a lot of doubles matches," Boilermakers head coach Pawel Gajdzik said, "but over time he improved tremendously his skills and strategy."

Madarász partnered with Ricky Medinilla as a junior and reached a program-record No. 4 ITA Collegiate ranking as a pair.

Madarász's career-high doubles world ranking has improved 219 positions this year.

One week prior to Budapest, Madarász and Balla reached the semifinals at the $25,000 winner-take-all Gyula Open. The result followed a season-opening finals round appearance at the Zalaegerszeg Open, where the duo challenged Romania's Andrei Apolstol and Nicolae Frunza, 5-7, 4-6, before taking runner-up honors.

Madarász is in Belgium this weekend, entering the qualifying rounds of the BATD Tour 2018 Future 3 Tournament at the Tennis Club d'Odrimont in Lasne.
