BALTIMORE - The Purdue men's golf team moved up one spot to eighth in the final standings of the Big Ten Championships which wrapped up Sunday at the Baltimore Country Club.

The Boilermakers finished eight by shooting 32-over par 872 (293-282-297), placing one shot behind seventh-place Michigan State (+31). Illinois won its fourth straight Big Ten Championship at 4-under par 836 (281-268-287) to defeat Ohio State by 15 shots (+11; 279-271-301=851). Iowa, Penn State, Northwestern, Michigan and Michigan State rounded out the top half of the field.

Purdue was led by senior Brian Carlson, who finished tied for 10th at 4-over par 214 (72-69-73). Jarle Volden finished 27th at 8-over par 218 (74-69-75) and Jason Hong was tied for 28th at 9-over par 219 (74-71-74). Timmy Hildebrand (73-73-75=221) was tied for 37th and Cole Bradley was tied for 60th (76-75-77) respectively.

Illinois' Nick Hardy was the individual medalist at 6-under par 204 (69-68-67).

BRADLEY QUOTABLE
"We are extremely disappointed with our finish this week. I know we have the ability to win and we just didn't get it done. We just made too many mistakes and left ourselves too much work to make a significant move this week. Brian Carlson continued to play well with another top-10 finish but the rest of the team really struggled. We have a lot of work to do before NCAA Regionals in a couple of weeks, but we are ready for the challenge and make sure we are ready to go. We have to get our schoolwork finished up this week and then get back to work. I am confident this team will bounce back."

THIS IS LATE APRIL?
Apparently not only Indiana has suffered from a brutal winter and spring season. Conditions on Sunday at the Baltimore Country Club were among the most difficult of the season. A strong northerly wind blew to 30 miles per hour, skies were cloudy most of the day and temperatures didn't get above 50 degrees during any part of Purdue's round. The weather caused team scores to balloon as just one team shot better than 295 and five teams were over 300. During the first two days (28 team rounds), just one team shot over 300 during a round. So, while it seemed that the Boilermakers really struggled, Purdue actually recorded the sixth-best round of the day, just two shots off the second-best round of the day set by Northwestern (+15).

STATS OF THE DAY
• In round two under nearly-ideal scoring conditions, the field average was just 71.51 strokes per round and 31 of 70 players in the field were at even- or under-par. In the final round, the stroke average was almost four strokes lower at 75.47 and just four players were even- or under par and just 10 players shot 72 (+2) or better.
• Hole No. 13 (par-4, 452 yards into the wind) played the toughest in round three, yielding a 4.70 hole average and just two birdies. One of the birdies came from Purdue freshman Jason Hong, who hit his approach shot to about 12 feet and then rolled in a slippery, big-bending putt to move him to 2-under par early on his round. The other birdie came from Northwestern's Ryan Lumsden.

BOILER NOTABLES
• Brian Carlson recorded his sixth top-10 finish of the season by placing T-10th at 4-over par 214. His six top-10 showings are tied for the fourth most in season in school history. His nine top-20 placings (in 11 events) are the tied for the second most in a season (Lee Williamson -- 10; 2002) and his 14 career top-10 placings are the fifth most in a career.
• Carlson's worst finish this spring was a T-12 placing at the Puerto Rico Classic. His finishes have been T-12, T-4, 1, T-5, T-11 and T-10.
• Carlson now has a stroke average of 71.66 this season, second on Purdue single-season chart. His 73.27 career average is the second lowest in school history.
