BALTIMORE, Md. – The Purdue men's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Big Ten Golf Championships, shooting a 293 to sit in ninth place after 18 holes at the Baltimore Country Club.

Ohio State leads the field after 18 holes at 1-under par 279, while Illinois is just two shots off the pace at 1-over par 281. Penn State (+4) and Northwestern (+5) round out the top four.

The next six teams, including Purdue, are within six shots of each other for fifth place, led by Maryland at 7-over par and Iowa and Wisconsin at 8-over par 288.

Brian Carlson led Purdue with a 2-over par 72, good for 19th place. Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 29th at 3-over par 73, while Jason Hong and Jarle Volden are tied for 35th at 4-over par 74. Cole Bradley is tied for 49th at 6-over par 76.

BRADLEY QUOTABLE
"We had a tough day today, but I am confident we will turn it around tomorrow. We just had a really tough start. We figured it out some after the first three or four holes, but we just need to get off to a better start."

TOUGH WEATHER AT THE START
Purdue played its first three holes in a fairly steady rain and a brisk northern wind. After about the fourth hole, the weather subsided and Purdue started to play better.

STATS OF THE DAY
• As a group, Purdue played the first three holes in 10 over par, tallying just five pars against 10 bogeys. Over the last 15 holes, Purdue combined to go 9-over par with the counting team posting a combined 5-over par.
• Purdue finished last in the field in pars made through 18 holes (49). Purdue actually finished fourth in birdies (12), but posted 27 bogeys and two double-bogeys.

BOILER NOTABLES
• Today's round marked the first time since the Crooked Stick Invitational (3rd round) on Oct. 17, 2017, that Purdue did not have a player shoot even-par or better.
• Purdue shot a 293 in the first round for the second consecutive event, doing so at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate last week in Columbus, Ohio. Purdue responded by shooting 283 and then 273 in the second and third rounds to win that event by six shots. The Boilermakers are hoping for more of the same this week.
• Purdue did shoot a 284 in last year's first round of the Big Ten Championship at the same Baltimore Country Club course.
• Purdue's 293 is its highest score in the Big Ten Championship since a final-round 308 in 2015.
Brian Carlson lowered his career scoring average to 73.31, still second on the Purdue's all-time career list.

UP NEXT
The Boilermakers will tee off at 9:40 a.m. ET, off hole No. 10 for Saturday's second round. Purdue will be paired with Michigan State and Rutgers.
