SUNSET, S.C. - The Purdue women's golf team posted a solid start at the third-annual Clemson Invitational on Friday, shooting one-over par, 289, and sitting tied for sixth place in the team standings after 18 holes. Junior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri offered up the Boilermakers' top individual score on the day, sitting tied for 15th place at one-under par, 71.
Putri used a team-high four birdies Friday to notch her seventh round at par or better this season. The bulk of her work came at the end of the front nine, sinking birdies on No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9, and added the fourth one on No. 17 to slip under par at the end of the round.
Senior Marta Martin posted her third straight round of par or better, coming in even at 72. She made birdies on No. 5 and No. 8, and finished with six straight pars to sit tied for 23rd after 18 holes. The final two team scores came from sophomore Micaela Farah and freshman Inez Wanamarta, who shot matching totals of one-over par, 73. Both had one birdie with two bogeys, as Farah got hers on No. 11, while Wanamarta dropped hers on No. 2.
Furman and Michigan State share the team lead at 11-under par, 277, and are two of five teams under par on the day. The Spartans' Sarah Burnham and Allyson Geer did the bulk of the work, shooting six-under par and five-under par, respectively, and Furman's Reona Hirai is tied with Geer in second at five-under par as well.
The Boilermakers open the second day of competition Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET, paired with Wisconsin and Texas A&M for the second round.
