COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Marta Martin led the Purdue women's golf team to an impressive start at the NCAA Columbus Regional on Monday, making six birdies and shooting two-under, 70, for the round. Martin leads the field with her score, while the Boilermakers are tied with regional host Ohio State in third place at 14-over, 302.
Martin eased her way into Monday's round, making bogey on a tough first hole and backing it up with consecutive pars. She caught fire on No. 4, making the first of five birdies in a seven-hole stretch, including three straight on No. 8, 9 and 10, pushing to three-under and vaulting herself to the top of the individual leaderboard. She'd stay there the rest of the day, adding a sixth birdie on No. 14 before finishing with a double bogey on No. 18 to close the round. Martin was the only player in the field to score under par on the day, and holds a two-shot lead heading into the second round.
Senior August Kim posted the second-best Boilermaker score of the day, carding a three-over, 75, and rests tied for 12th after 18 holes. Kim dropped birdies on No. 2 and No. 12 on Monday, and added 11 pars for the round. Freshman Micaela Farah added her 17th straight team score for the Boilermakers, finishing at six-over, 78, while sophomores Covadonga SanJuan and Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri halved the final team score at seven-over, 79.
Top-seeded and fourth-ranked Florida holds the team lead at nine-over, 297, with a two-shot lead over second-place Florida State. Ohio State and Purdue are tied for third, while Texas A&M is fifth at 20-over par, 308, and Arkansas and South Carolina are tied for sixth at 21-over, 309. Wisconsin's Gabby Curtis and Florida State's Morgane Metraux are tied for second on the individual leaderboard, two shots behind Martin at even-par 72.
Purdue's play resumes tomorrow at 8:24 a.m. ET, as the Boilermakers open play on the first hole with Texas A&M and Arkansas.
