SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Purdue senior August Kim got off to an outstanding start at the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Friday, shooting even-par, 72, at Rich Harvest Farms and sitting tied for the individual lead. The Boilermakers are tied for ninth place in the team standings, shooting 27-over par, 315, and are just four shots out of third place.
Kim got off to a quick start Friday, rebounding from a bogey on No. 1 to eagle the second hole and add the first of four birdies on No. 5 to move to two-under par. The Purdue senior went back-and-forth with the demanding course and brutal weather throughout the afternoon, but managed to answer every bogey with a birdie to keep her score even. She's tied with Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet at the top of the leaderboard, while Northwestern's Janet Mao and Kent State's Karoline Stormo managed to finish one-over par, 73, in the rough conditions.
Sophomore Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri turned in the Boilermakers' No. 2 score at seven-over, 79, while junior Marta Martin and freshman Micaela Farah tied for the No. 3 and 4 scores at 10-over, 82. Putri drained two birdies on the afternoon, getting in early on a par-5 on each side, while Martin added two of her own, besting the No. 5 par-3 and par-4 No. 12. The Boilermakers turned in the best average score in the field on par-3's, carding just 3.05 strokes per hole.
Northwestern owns the team lead at 12-over par, 300, while Kent State is three shots back at 15-over par, 303. Four teams are tied for third at 23-over par, 311, including Ohio State, just four shots ahead of the Boilermakers, Southern California and Michigan.
Purdue opens tomorrow's second round at noon CT, playing again alongside Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Michigan. Saturday's conditions should be much warmer, as Friday's temperature hovered in the mid-40's, but also feature a 90 percent chance of rain and potential thunderstorms.
