Saturday Results / Sunday Heat Sheets

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -
The 15th-ranked women's team has set itself up for an exciting Sunday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. The Boilermakers sit in fourth place with 33 points on the women's side, while then men are 12th with two.

Savannah Carson worked her way onto the top step of the podium Saturday. She won the long jump to sweep the indoor and outdoor conference titles with a wind-legal (+1.8) leap of 6.47 meters (21-2.75). All four of Carson's fair jumps were better than the best mark by any other competitor. She is the first Boilermaker to win the indoor and outdoor event in the same year since Leah Eber did so in 2012. Eber also did so in 2011. Carson's win makes it four of the last seven for the Boilermakers at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Nikki Nunn won the event in 2014 to go along with Eber's two wins and Carson's victory Saturday. The win earned 10 points for Purdue.

Janae' Moffitt earned the silver medal in the high jump for the second year in a row. Moffitt was clean through her first four bars, clearing 1.81m (5-11.25). That looked like it might be enough for the win, until Michigan's Claire Kieffer-Wright cleared 1.84m (6-0.50) on her third attempt. Moffitt's jump ties her season best and earns eight points for the women.

Micaela Hazlewood got on the board for the second day in a row. She finished fourth in the discus to score five points. Hazlewood needed a big third throw just to make finals and delivered with a distance of 51.95m (170-5) to move her into third. That was her best throw overall and she held on for fourth place.

The Boilermakers put themselves in great position on the track. After advancing all four individuals to the 200m dash final Friday, the women pulled off the same feat in the 100m dash. Carson and Sekayi Bracey, who also made the long jump final and finished ninth, were in the first heat and finished 1-2, respectively, to earn automatic bids to the finals. Then it was Carmiesha Cox's turn, as she took third in the second heat with a time of 11.70 seconds and earned the top at-large berth. In the final heat, Devynne Charlton ran the top overall time of the prelims, posting an 11.42. The Boilermakers had the top three times in the prelims, with Carson's time finishing No. 2 and Bracey's No. 3. It's the second year in a row Purdue has advanced four to the 100m dash finals.

The 400m dash was the first running event of the day. Freshman Samara Miller was the first to advance to finals as she earned an automatic bid by winning her heat with a time of 53.54 seconds. That time is a personal best by 0.70 of a second and ranks sixth in school history. Then it was Chloe Abbott and Brionna Thomas' turn as the two were together in heat four. Abbott went on to finish second in the heat with a time of 53.50 seconds to earn an at-large berth, while Thomas was third in the heat and advanced with a time of 53.57 seconds. Jahneya Mitchell just missed the finals out of heat one, as she finished third in the heat with a time of 54.28 seconds. She was the first one out and will finish 10th in the event.

The women's hurdles will bring two back to finals after PR days. Savannah Roberson was first, earning an automatic bid with a second place finish in the first heat with a wind-legal (+0.9) time of 13.33 seconds. That is her best as a Boilermaker and it ranks third in school history. Then it was Charlton's turn and she finished with the top overall time of the prelims, finishing in 12.89 seconds (+1.4) to tie her own school record.

Kiara McIntosh had a huge PR in the 800m run to make it back to finals. She won her heat of the 800m run with a time of 2:04.74. That time is 1.77 seconds faster than she has ever run the race. Her time ranks second in school history and is just 0.08 of a second off the school record.

On the men's side, Justin Veteto made it back to the 110m hurdles finals. He earned an automatic bid after finishing second in his heat with a time of 14.04 seconds (+1.2). Kyle Webb was within 0.01 of a second of the men's 100m dash finals. The senior took 11th with a time of 10.60 seconds.

Sunday will be action packed for the Boilermakers and available to watch on BTN2Go starting at 11:30 a.m. ET. The meet will re-air on Big Ten Network at 7 p.m.
