Texas Relays Results / Bobcat Invite Results
AUSTIN, Texas - Symone Black ran the No. 2 time in the nation to finish runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles Friday at the Texas Relays. Emma Benner broke the women's school record in the 5,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational, while Kinard Rolle and Shawndail McLaren went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, as the team competed in three meets.
Black was in the 400m hurdles finals after qualifying Thursday. She competed against several of the top 20 runners in the country and finished with a time of 56.18 seconds. Her time was 0.25 of a second of her own school record and 0.06 of a second behind Kymber Payne of LSU who won the race. The time is the second fastest of her career.
Benner ran the first 5k of her outdoor Purdue career. She took advantage by breaking the school record with a time of 16:17.83. The time broke Ann Stechschulte's 2002 record of 16:19.87.
"I wasn't worried about my time beyond trying to qualify for regionals," Benner said. "I went in with a pretty big week of training, so I wasn't really expecting a PR. I just wanted to run an honest race. I didn't even know it was the school records until (distance) coach (Jeff) Kent told me a few hours later."
Jaret Carpenter nearly broke the men's 5,000-meter men's record at the Stanford Invite. The freshman ran a time of 14:02.12 to earn the No. 2 time in school history, just 5.32 seconds behind Matthew McClintock's school record. Carpenter's time is a freshman record.
Obokhare Ikpefan won the men's 400m hurdles invitational at the Texas Relays. He ran a season-best time of 50.83 seconds. Gerald McGee took fourth in the men's long jump at the meet. He leapt windy (+2.3) 7.43m (24-4.50). Matthew Garrison also made the long jump finals at the Texas Relays. He finished eighth with a windy leap of 7.29m (23-11.00) (+2.6).
Caleb Fricke won the men's discus at the Texas Relays. He had his most consistent series of the year with a best of 53.38m (175-01). Devynne Charlton won her heat of the 100m hurdles at the Texas Relays. She ran a windy (+3.8) time of 13.17 seconds and will advance to Saturday's finals.
Waseem Williams was busy Friday with 100m dashes at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational. At the Texas Relays, he ran a very windy (+5.1) time of 10.39 seconds. He was one spot and 0.006 of a second outside of qualifying for finals. Because his wind was above 4.0 meters per second, his time does not count towards a regional qualification. In the afternoon, though, he ran a windy (+2.9) time of 10.44 seconds. That was the sixth fastest at the Bobcat Invite.
At the Stanford Relays, Kiara McIntosh ran a time of 4:23.41 seconds. That time is 0.37 of a second off her PR, which is the No. 7 time in school history. McIntosh's time a year ago was a regional qualifier.
Sekayi Bracey was in the 100m dash at the Texas Relays. She ran a wind-legal (+1.9) time of 11.69 seconds. That time ranks seventh on the school history list among wind-legal times. She also competed in the long jump at Texas State and finished with a best leap of 5.71m (18-8.75).
Jaden Mattox had a big day in the long jump at Texas State. She finished runner-up with a wind-legal (+2.0) leap of 5.98m (19-7.50). Mattox had four leaps of at least 5.87m (19-3.00). She led going into the final round before finishing second.
Micaela Hazlewood, Sarah Loesch and Alisha Bahler finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the hammer throw at Texas State. Hazlewood threw 57.55m (188-10), while Loesch had a mark of 57.15m (187-6). Bahler threw 54.51m (178-10).
Rolle won the men's 400m dash at Texas State, while McLaren was second. Rolle ran a time of 47.26 seconds, while McLaren crossed the line in 47.38 into a strong headwind in the homestretch.
