WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue (15-21, 4-0 B1G) took the series opener 4-2 against Iowa (6-21, 0-4 B1G) on Friday on Kaitlynn Moody's complete game in which both runs were unearned. With the sophomore's sixth win of the season, the Boilermakers remained undefeated at home and have now won five consecutive contests.
"We had some key hits tonight at the right time," head coach Boo De Oliveira said. "Our team showed a lot of fortitude by recovering from early errors. They are truly locked into the process of having a quick failure recovery, owning their confidence, and executing. It's exciting to see them play at a high caliber and embrace the grind."
Maya Hughes extended her hitting streak to five games with her fourth multi-hit performance in that stretch. The junior outfielder finished with a run batted in as well as a run scored which was set up by her third triple of the season. Mallory Baker also finished with a multi-hit game with an RBI, a run scored and two doubles, giving her nine in 2017.
Moody grinded out seven innings, allowing just two unearned runs to go along with three strikeouts. With her performance she lowers her earned run average to 2.73 on the season and has gone seven innings in each of her last three starts.
Hughes kicked off the game with a bang, roping a ball to right and coasting into third for an easy triple. Baker took advantage of the leadoff hit with a double to score Hughes and lift Purdue to a 1-0 advantage in the first.
The Boilermakers struck again in the second inning as Lexi Huffman doubled to right to score Erika Beeler who was pinch running for Moody after she reached second on an error by the Iowa shortstop. The lineup then turned over to Hughes who singled to score Huffman.
After the Hawkeyes chipped away at Purdue's lead in the third, capitalizing on a pair of errors to pull within one, the Boilermakers responded in the fifth when Baker doubled to left and an error by the Hawkeyes' third baseman in an attempt to record the third out of the inning allowed Baker to score.
Moody finished the game with four scoreless frames to hold off Iowa and seal the victory for the Boilermakers.
The series continues in Bittinger Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
