WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Three new program records and six Boilermakers scoring in all three of their individual events highlighted the 2017 Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming & diving.
Kaersten Meitz eclipsed her own program record in the 500 freestyle (4:37.35) twice en route to claiming the league's bronze medal as the third-place finisher in the championship final. Meitz finished among the top 11 in all three of her individual events, accounting for a team-high 66 team points.
Emily Meaney established new program and freshman records in platform diving (359.3), eclipsing the freshman mark in the prelims and the team record in the championship final while finishing fourth. The Australian broke a freshman record that stood since 2008.
Seventeen Boilermakers accounted for team points in an individual event, helping Purdue finish in sixth place. The Boilermakers finished among the top half of the conference for the fourth time in the last five years.
Jackie Smailis, Cady Farlow, Meagan Lim and Danielle Auckley eclipsed the Purdue record in the 200 medley relay (1:38.30) to begin the meet. It marked the third year in a row the Boilermakers set a new record in a medley relay at the Big Ten Championships. Smailis (25) and Lim (23 points) joined Emmy Rawson (30), Taite Kitchel (29), Alex Clarke (20) and Meitz as the six Boilermakers to score in all three of their individual events. Auckley, Meitz and Smailis were all part of four different relays.
Farlow ranked fourth on the team in scoring (37 points), accounting for one of Purdue's eight appearances in a championship final. Morgan Meixner (39) and Samm Reese (36) both qualified for the championship final of 3-meter diving en route to finishing among the top five on the team in scoring. With Meaney also representing Purdue in the consolation final, 3-meter diving was the team's top scoring event (58).
Led by Taite Kitchel's appearance in the A final, the Boilermakers had five swimmers qualify for finals in the 200 butterfly (47). Kate May, Clarke, Lim and Rawson also scored in the event.
Lexi Vincent won the consolation final of platform diving, teaming with Meaney to give Purdue two of the top finishers in the event.
Selected Boilermakers will compete Saturday at the Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance meet. Swimming qualifiers for the NCAA Championships are expected to be announced the first week of March. The divers compete at the NCAA Zone C Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, on March 9 to 11. That meet will serve as the NCAA qualifier for the divers.
