Tyson Results / Iowa State Results

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark./AMES, Iowa -
The track & field teams found success at the Tyson and Iowa State Invitationals on Friday. The Boilermakers broke a school record and had three other top -five marks in program history, while adding three conference-leading marks.

At the Iowa State Invite, freshmen Emma Benner and Jaret Carpenter highlighted a big day for the distance group. Benner took down the 33-year old 5,000-meter school record time of 16:12.0 set by Becky Cotta on March 3, 1984. Benner used a final 300-meter lap time of 56.998 seconds to cap a 16:09.68. It's the fastest 5k ever run by a Purdue woman, indoors or out. Her time ranks sixth in the conference this season.

After watching Benner's 5k, it was Carpenter's turn in the men's event. He kept a steady lap pace just over 50 seconds, before coming home in 47.133 to cross the line in 13:57.08. Carpenter's time is the second fastest in school history, 3.96 seconds behind record-holder Matthew McClintock, and is currently the top time in the conference. Carpenter and McClintock, a 2016 graduate, are the only Boilermakers ever to break the 14-minute barrier.

Grace Lachmund also had a big day in the 5k. She ran a time of 17:07.63 in the women's 5k. Her time is a personal best by more than 18 seconds.

At the Tyson Invitational, Savannah Carson tied her PR and No. 2 mark in school history in the long jump. Carson leapt 6.41m (21-0.50) on her third attempt to earn a second place finish. She held off Tierra Williams of Nebraska, who had the top mark in the conference heading into the meet, as well as Jahisha Thomas of Iowa, who had the No. 2 mark in the Big Ten. Carson was third in the Big Ten, but now leads and has the No. 8 mark in the country.

Devynne Charlton won her heat of the 60-meter hurdle semifinals and then took second in the finals in the event. She matched her season-best time of 8.02 seconds in the finals, which she has now run in back-to-back weeks. That mark is fourth in the country. Savannah Roberson continued her strong year in the 60m hurdles as well. She ran another PR with a time of 8.47 seconds in the qualifying round. That time is tied for the fifth fastest in program history. Roberson backed that up with a time of 8.49 seconds in the semifinals.

The women had a good day in the 400m dash. Brionna Thomas ran a season-best time of 53.23 seconds, which is the top time in the conference this year. Symone Black was in the Olympic Development 400m dash and finished with a time of 53.96 seconds, her best of the year. Black's time ranks fourth in the conference. Chloe Abbott had another strong performance in the event. She finished with a time of 54.74 seconds, which is 0.51 of a second off her PR.

Sarah Loesch was a winner in the weight throw for the second week in a row. She was just off her PR with a best throw of 19.95m (65-5.50). She won by 6.75 inches.

Sekayi Bracey had one of her best days as a Boilermaker. She had a Purdue-best leap of 5.69m (18-8.00) in the long jump and ran a time of 7.52 seconds in the 60m dash. Carson was consistent in the 60m dash and had times of 7.42 seconds and 7.44 seconds in the qualifying and semifinals, respectively.

The Boilermakers have a busy day at Tyson on Saturday. The action will begin at noon ET.
