Purdue Men's and Women's Divers at House of Champions Invitational

Friday to Sunday, Nov. 18 to 20 at 10 a.m. ET
IU Natatorium / Indianapolis, Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue divers make the short trip south to the Circle City to compete at a familiar venue this weekend, taking to the boards at the three-day House of Champions Invitational hosted by IUPUI.

Action is set for Friday through Sunday at the IU Natatorium. Diving events, which are being contested as a finals-only format, begin daily at 10 a.m. ET. Friday, the men will compete on 1-meter and the women on 3-meter. They'll switch springboards Saturday and both move to the platforms Sunday.

The Boilermakers opted for this meet in part because the men's and women's NCAA Championships are both being held at the IU Natatorium in March. Florida State, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.) and Minnesota will also have only divers in attendance and figure to be Purdue's top competition. Nine other schools are set to compete at the full swimming & diving invitational as well.

Of Purdue's eight divers expected to compete, only Joe Cifelli is currently entered in all three diving events. Steele Johnson is focusing on the springboard events until January, when he is likely to resume competition from the platforms. Johnson was an Olympian in both individual and synchronized 10-meter events and the full Olympic year of training and competition on 10-meter takes a toll on a diver. Head coach Adam Soldati is aiming to keep Johnson as healthy as possible as they look ahead to the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships in February and March.

Australian Emily Meaney is likely Purdue's only diver that has not competed at the IU Natatorium at some point in her career. She will make her collegiate debut on platform Sunday. The event was among her specialties in Australia. She earned a 10-meter berth at the 2016 FINA Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Max Showalter and Lexi Vincent will also compete from the platforms this weekend as well. Both qualified for the NCAA Championships as freshmen last season in part because they excelled from the platforms. The Boilermakers have yet to compete in the event so far this season. But it will be a prominent part of Purdue's spring-semester meets and be featured in the dual with Indiana and the Big Ten Triple Duals with Minnesota and Northwestern, as well as Big Tens, Diving Zones and NCAAs.

As a Carmel native, Johnson not only grew up training and competing often at the IU Natatorium, but it was also a big part of his life over the last year. Both the 2015 USA Diving Winter Nationals and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials were held in Indianapolis. He won two national titles on 10-meter at Winter Nationals and then earned his first career Olympic berth in both 10-meter events at the Olympic Trials.

Cifelli and Showalter also competed at the IU Natatorium for the Winter Nationals and Olympic Trials during their first years as Boilermakers.

This year the USA Diving Winter Nationals (Dec. 15-21) returns to Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus. Two years ago when Johnson won on 10-meter at Winter Nationals in Columbus, new Boilermaker Brandon Loschiavo finished as the runner-up. While he won't be competing from 10-meter this weekend, Loschiavo remains the only diver to win a collegiate event that featured Johnson this year. Loschiavo was victorious on 3-meter in the season-opening dual with Miami. His score that night of 392.78 was good for 10th in program history.

Also a freshman, Meaney has a pair of event victories on 1-meter this season.
