WILMINGTON, N.C. - Purdue women's golf senior August Kim shot a season-best four-under, 68, to lead the 14th-ranked Boilermakers into a tie for fourth place after two rounds at the 2016 Landfall Tradition, hosted by UNC Wilmington at the Country Club of Landfall on Saturday. Kim surged into a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard, while the Boilermakers sit eight shots off the lead and just one shot shy of second place heading into the final day.
After shooting even-par in the opening round, Kim played flawless golf Saturday afternoon, sinking four birdies and 14 pars to jump from 13th to second place. Three of the four birdies came on the front nine, while her fourth and final birdie came on the par-5 18th hole to close the round.
Sophomore Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri joins Kim in the top-10 of the individual standings, sitting tied for ninth after shooting even-par, 72, Saturday, and owning a score of one-under after 36 holes. She was back-and-forth on the front nine, countering two birdies with a double bogey and two bogeys and making the turn at two-over, but seven pars and two birdies on the back side took her into the clubhouse at even.
Junior Marta Martin bounced back from a tough first day to shoot one-over, 73, making 14 consecutive pars to finish up her day, while classmate Linn Andersson and sophomore Covadonga SanJuan tied for the final team score at four-over, 76. SanJuan had a solid day until the 16th hole, sitting one-under, with five birdies before approaching the 146-yard, par 3. She turned in an eight on the hole to move to four-over and fall to a tie for 26th in the individual standings.
Wake Forest surged into the team lead Saturday, shooting four-under, 284, and holding a seven-shot lead on South Carolina and Oklahoma. Purdue is tied with Furman in fourth place, and the two teams lead the sixth-place team, North Carolina State, by eight shots. Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho owns the individual lead at five-under par, after shooting six-under, 66, Saturday, while Kim is tied with Alabama's Cheyenne Knight in second.
The Boilermakers tee off the third and final round tomorrow at 8:45 a.m., on the fourth hole, and are paired with Furman and North Carolina State for the last 18.
