WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Black Team pitching did not allow a hit after a leadoff single in the second inning, leading the way as Black won the finale of Purdue baseball's Old Gold & Black Series 8-1 Saturday at Alexander Field.

The three-game intrasquad series ended in a 1-1-1 stalemate after game one finished in an 8-8 Thursday. The Black Team did finish with an 18-12 edge in the scoring margin for the series after the one-sided result in the finale.

The Black Team scored three times in the first and fourth innings. Jacson McGowan and Evan Warden both had a pair of hits and scored twice. Warden doubled down the left field line twice. McGowan also closed out the win with two innings of hitless relief, striking out three while retiring all six batters he faced.

Logan Poisall connected for a two-run homer into the left field bullpen in the fourth inning, hitting the only long ball of the series. However, he failed to touch first base as he rounded the bases. The Gold Team appealed and the field umpire called Poisall out. Evan Kennedy was still allowed to score because he was on first base when Poisall went deep.

Harry Shipley and Alec Olund both had three productive plate appearances. Shipley singled, walked and executed a squeeze bunt. He also scored from first base on a hit-and-run single to right field by Skyler Hunter after leading off the game for the Black Team with a base hit. The shortstop made the top defensive play of the game as well, a diving catch on a line drive to rob Hayden Grant of a two-out single in the fourth inning.

Jack Dellinger led the way on the mound for the Black Team with four innings of one-run ball. After four of the first eight batters he faced reached base safely, the freshman was able to retire the final seven batters to come to the plate against him. He was able to limit the Gold Team to one run after a walk and bunt single for Stephen Kalina and Milo Beam to begin the game. An inning later, he erased Grant's leadoff single by inducing a 6-3 double play.

Cameron Williams struck out a pair while pitching over a leadoff walk in the fifth inning in his second appearance of the series for the Black Team. Hunter Hollis needed only seven pitches for a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second for the Gold Team. He struck out the first two batters he faced.

Nick Dalesandro connected for an RBI double to right center in the first inning. The sophomore finished the weekend 4-for-8 with a series-high four RBI. Olund had seven productive plate appearances in nine trips to the dish in the series. He had a sacrifice fly, infield single and a walk Saturday.

The Black Team executed consecutive squeeze bunts in the fourth inning. Johnny Carr laid down the first bunt and then tried to score from second on Shipley's bunt, but was out at the plate. Two innings later, Warden was able to score from second base when the Gold Team was unable to retire John LeGare at first after strike three was in the dirt.

The Boilermakers open their 2017 season the weekend of Feb. 17 to 19 with a four-game series at Texas State.
