WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Dalton Parker worked six innings of one-hit ball and Drew Bertram delivered a walk-off single to lift the Gold Team to a 3-2 victory in the middle game of Purdue baseball's Old Gold & Black Series on Friday at Alexander Field.
Bertram came through with the third of three straight one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh (of a seven-inning game). Mitchell Garrity scored the game-winning run from second base.
The Black Team proved resilient for the second day in a row. After overcoming an 8-1 deficit to salvage a tie Thursday, it extended the game despite trailing 2-0 with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the seventh. Nick Dalesandro delivered the game-tying hit to right field after a walk to Jacson McGowan and a double to left field from Alec Olund set the stage.
Parker retired 17 of the 20 batters he faced, working three true 1-2-3 innings. The only hit he surrendered was a single by Harry Shipley to begin the game, a base runner that erased by a subsequent 4-6-3 double play. Parker recorded all four of his strikeouts his second time through the Black Team's lineup. The freshman retired the final eight batters he faced.
Milo Beam reached base safely three times and made a nice diving catch in left center to rob Shipley of a leadoff single in the top of the fourth. Beam's one-out single helped ignite the Gold Team's two-run fourth inning. Mike Madej followed with a base hit to center field, taking second on an error. Bryce Bonner picked up an RBI with a slow chopper to shortstop and Madej also scored on the play when the ball rolled under Shipley's glove and into no man's land.
Tanner Schumacher pitched well for the Black Team, surrendering just one earned run over five innings. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Hayden Grant doubled for the second game in a row and finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt. He singled in between Garrity and Bertram in the seventh inning. Bonner ripped a double off the wall in left field in his first at-bat.
Jack Coney made a fine defensive play at third base to open the third inning, taking away a leadoff single from Logan Poisall.
The finale of the Old Gold & Black Series is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
