BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Emma Benner and Jaret Carpenter swept the Indiana Intercollegiates for the Boilermakers on Friday. The freshmen from Minnesota battled rain and a muddy course to take the top spot in the women's and men's races against collegiate competition from across the state.

Benner won her second collegiate race in as many tries, running away with the 5,000-meter championship race. She finished with a time of 17:42.76 to win by 9.29 seconds over the second-place finisher, despite battling a muddy course and multiple weather delays. Benner, who was named the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week after winning the season-opening Golden Eagle Invitational, is the second freshman woman to win the meet in as many years. Haley Harris of Indiana won last year as a freshman when the Boilermakers competed elsewhere. Harris was eighth at this year's race. Benner is the first Purdue woman to win the Indiana Intercollegiates since Katie Morrical won for Purdue in 2008.

On the men's side, Carpenter picked up his first collegiate victory after finishing runner-up in the season opener. He ran a time of 25:34.16 to hold off seniors from IPFW and Indiana in the 8,000-meter race. Carpenter is the first freshman man to win the race since John Mascari of Indiana State in 2012. Together, they are the first individuals to win from the same school in the same year since 2010. Carpenter is the first man at Purdue to win the Indiana Intercollegiates since Stephen Schulz won in 2011.

Kiara McIntosh had a nice day on the women's side. The senior finished fourth overall with a time of 18:16.58. Mary Abramson and Jenna Halderman were ninth and 10th, respectively. They finished with times of 18:48.65 and 18:57.34. Alyssa Christoffer rounded out the scoring with a 12th-place time of 19:04.49.

The women finished second at the meet with 36 points, just 13 behind the top spot.

On the men's side, Jeremy Craven was Purdue's second finisher. He crossed the line with a seventh-place time of 25:48.24. Matthew Grider was ninth with a time of 25:59.31, while Ben Mohrdieck finished 13th with a time of 26:15.42. Ben Anderson rounded out the scoring with a time of 26:23.10, which was good for 16th.

The men finished second at the meet with 44 points.

The Boilermakers have a week off before heading to Notre Dame. The men and women will compete at the Notre Dame Invite on Sept. 30 in South Bend, Indiana.
