WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue women's soccer led for 77 minutes after scoring early, but Montana equalized late in regulation and scored on the first shot of overtime to complete the comeback, defeating the Boilermakers 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Folk Field.

Hannah Leinert scored her eighth career goal for Purdue and the 35th of her college career in the sixth minute (5:32). It was the Boilermakers' earliest goal in a game since Maddy Williams also scored in the sixth minute (5:24) in the 3-1 win at Montana last year. But while Purdue extended its early lead vs. Montana last season, taking a 3-0 edge into the half after Leinert scored twice, on this day they were unable to add the early advantage.

When the Grizzlies (2-0) scored in the 84th and 92nd minutes, Purdue suffered its first loss after scoring a game's first goal in the opening 10 minutes since October 2014 at Maryland.

Back on the active roster after missing last season with a broken leg, Montana's Hallie Widner scored the equalizer and assisted on McKenzie Warren's game winner. Widner headed in Mary Gintz's bounding throw-in from the west sideline, floating the ball over the head of Purdue goalkeeper Jordan Ginther. Only 83 seconds after overtime kicked off, Widner connected a back-heel pass to Warren on the inside edge of the 18-yard box. Warren scored with a well-placed shot into the top left corner of the net.

Leinert scored with a shot into a wide open net after beating Norman around the corner on the right side of the 18-yard box. Gabby LaMere sprung her teammate free from the Montana back line with a long pass up the west sideline. The Boilermakers suffered their first loss when Leinert has scored a goal after going 6-0 last year.

Purdue failed to finish a variety of quality scoring chances, most notably freshman Breana Robbins missing wide right while unmarked from the heart of the 18-yard box with 17 seconds remaining in regulation. Robbins did impress again with her work rate and ability to maintain possession when going 1-v-1 with a defender.

Two other notable instances in which a Purdue player did not put a shot on frame while shooting unmarked from the heart of 18-yard box included Ena Sabanagic (missed high) in the 44th minute and Vanessa Korolas (wide right) in the 63rd minute. Andrea Petrina was farther from goal when she missed high from the top of the 18 in the 80th minute.

Ginther made the best save of the game in the 18th minute, a diving stop to her left at the right post on Janessa Fowler's free kick from the top of the 18-yard box that was well placed to the right of the Purdue wall of defenders.

Montana goalkeeper Kailey Norman's best save was made at the top of the 62nd minute. It was a leaping save to her left, getting her fingertips on a diagonal shot from Leinert. That led to Purdue's second and final corner kick of the day. The Grizzlies had a 5-2 edge in corners, but the home side finished with a 15-10 edge in shots.

Dannah Williams was Purdue's only field player to go the distance. Erika Arkans logged 47 minutes to lead the reserves. Megan Kaser was a late addition to the starting lineup, going in at center back as Korolas replaced Maddy Duncan at left back. Duncan was able to play, one of six Purdue freshmen to see action. The Boilermakers had four freshmen on the field together to finish the first half. Lydia Brosnahan made her regular-season collegiate debut, seeing action at center back.

Purdue returns to action Friday for an 8 p.m. ET game at Baylor.
