ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Anna Appert Lund posted a 4&3 victory to lead the Purdue women's golf team to a tiebreaker victory over fourth-ranked Big Ten rival Northwestern for a fifth-place finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, hosted by Geogia at the UGA Golf Course on Sunday. Appert Lund and junior teammate August Kim finished 2-0-1 for the tournament, leading the Boilermakers to a 2-1 match-play showing for the tournament.
Appert Lund led wire-to-wire over Northwestern's Kacie Komoto on Sunday, building her lead to 3-up over the first nine holes and then sinking back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11, to push the lead as high as 5-up. Komoto fought back and cut the lead to 3-up after 13, but Appert Lund capitalized on the 14th hole and halved the 15th to seal the win.
Freshman Covadonga SanJuan had to come from behind to earn the Boilermakers' other victory for the day, rallying from 3-down vs. Sarah Cho to earn a 2&1 win. Cho did work early, taking a 3-up lead after six holes, but SanJuan was able to battle back recovering strokes on No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10, and taking her first lead of the match on No. 12. The pair traded points on No. 13 and No. 14, but the Boilermaker rookie sealed the match with a birdie on the par 3 17th hole.
Kim kept the match alive for the Boilermakers by halving the match against Stephanie Lau with a par on No. 16. The Purdue junior led by as many as two holes during the match, but fell behind on the back-nine as Lau won three straight holes on 10, 11 and 12. Kim got a point back on No. 13, fell behind on 15, and locked up the final tie on 16.
Purdue sophomore Linn Andersson came up just short against Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, recovering from a three-down hole to tie the match after 16 holes, but lost the final two. Fellow sophomore Marta Martin and Northwestern's Hannah Kim put on a great show in their matchup, combining for 10 straight holes without a bogey from No. 5 to No. 14, but Kim held on to a lead the whole way for a 2&1 victory.
Fifth-ranked Alabama claimed the overall title, earning a 3-2 victory over No. 3 UCLA in the championship, while second-ranked USC earned third with a 4-1 win over No. 6 Georgia.
The Boilermakers return to stroke play next weekend, heading to Lubbock, Texas for the Red Raider Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9.
