
IOWA CITY, Iowa ââ'¬" The Boilermakers outhit the Hawkeyes 12-11, but left eight runners on base as Iowa won the series finale 10-3 on Sunday. Purdue won the first two games 6-4 and 8-7 on Friday and Saturday.
Seven players contributed to Purdue's 12-hit tally, including freshman Lauren Stewart, who went 3-for-3 with a run. Senior Paris Andrew, junior Kristen Hoppman and sophomore Kaylah Hampton also had multi-hit days, posting two apiece. Iowa managed its 10 runs on 11 hits and two Boilermaker miscues.
Iowa starter Elizabeth Wiegand (5-6) picked up the win after striking out one and allowing just one run in four and a third innings. Three relief pitchers saw time in the circle for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Gina Snyder issued four strikeouts in the loss for Purdue. Freshman Maddie Damon and junior Katie Johnson contributed three K's in the final three and a third innings.
Purdue had a base runner in the first and the second, but could not capitalize. Hoppman reached on an error to start the game, but that was erased by a fielder's choice and double play. In the second, Stewart singled but was later caught stealing.
Iowa took the early lead care of a two-run home run by Allie Wood in the second inning. The long ball followed a one-out double in the inning.
The Boilermakers put two runners in scoring position in the third as freshman Lexi Huffman singled and Hoppman followed with a double, but a pop up left the pair stranded.
The Hawkeyes went ahead 6-0 with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the inning. Iowa combined a trio of singles for the first score. After the Boilermakers got a fielder's choice play at the plate, Wood struck again with a three-run homer to center field. Damon entered the game to pitch and forced a ground ball to end the inning.
Purdue broke onto the scoreboard with three hits in the fourth. Stewart and Hampton posted one-out singles and Andrew made good on the RBI opportunity with a double to right field. A pair of infield grounders left two aboard.
Hoppman singled and stole second in the fifth inning, but the Boilermakers could not bring her home.
Purdue cut the Iowa lead to three with a pair of runs on five hits in the sixth. Singles by Hampton and Andrew set the table for a two-run double by senior Katie Harrison. A pinch hit single by senior CJ Parsons gave the Boilermakers runners at the corners, but a fielder's choice play ended the inning.
Iowa pulled away with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth. Erin Erickson lifted a one-out solo home run. A single and a wild pitch set up an RBI single to make it 8-3. An error by the Boilermakers gave the Hawkeyes another base runner and a walk filled the basepaths. A double to left center plated the final two unearned runs.
Stewart drew a two-out walk in the seventh to keep hope alive for the Boilermakers, but a ground ball to the shortstop ended the game.
The Boilermakers (20-15, 2-4 B1G) return to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday, when they face off with the Indiana Hoosiers in a doubleheader live on the Big Ten Network. It is social media day at the Boilermaker Softball Stadium and fans are encouraged to join the conversation using the hashtag #PurdueIUSB.
