LINCOLN, Neb. ââ'¬" The Boilermakers split a Friday doubleheader with Nebraska, taking a 4-3 decision in eight innings in Game 1 and falling 8-0 in five innings in the night cap.
The Boilermakers took the lead in Game 1 and never relinquished it, using a two-run eighth inning to pull away for good and hold on for the victory. In Game 2, Nebraska got four runs on a pair of home runs in the first three innings and poured on four more in the fourth, while holding Purdue hitless.
Senior Katie Harrison led the Boilermakers with three hits on the day.
In the circle, senior Lilly Fecho picked up the Game 1 win. Sophomore Gina Snyder picked up the save in Game 1 and was saddled with the loss in Game 2.
The teams are slated to wrap up the three-game series at 2 p.m. ET Saturday, weather permitting.
Purdue 4, Nebraska 3
The Boilermakers scored two in the top of the eighth and held off a late Husker charge in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 win in Game 1.
Senior Katie Harrison went 3-for-4 to lead the Boilermaker bats, which posted four runs on six hits and four Husker errors. Nebraska managed its three runs on 10 hits and two Purdue miscues.
Senior Lilly Fecho (18-10) struck out four in the victory, going seven and a third in the win. Sophomore Gina Snyder picked up her second save of the season, forcing a double play to end the contest. Cassie McClure (16-9) struck out five in the loss for Nebraska.
The Boilermakers got two base runners in the opening stanza care of Nebraska miscues, but could not take advantage. Junior Kristen Hoppman reached on an error by the shortstop to start the game, but was out on a double play later in the inning. A fielding miscue by the third baseman put freshman Emily Kenny on base, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Freshman Lexi Huffman tallied the game's first hit with a one-out single to second base in the second inning, but was left stranded.
Nebraska got its first base runner on a two-out single in the bottom of the third. An error allowed the runner to advance to second, but the Boilermaker defense held, nabbing a ground ball to end the stanza.
The Boilermakers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth care of a one-out solo home run by senior Katie Harrison. The long ball to left was Harrison's sixth of the season. Freshman Lauren Stewart also reached in the inning, drawing a walk, but was later caught stealing.
Nebraska tied it up with a run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff single and hit batsman set up a one-out RBI single up the middle. A strikeout and pop foul left two Huskers aboard.
Purdue regained the advantage on an RBI double by Hoppman in the fifth. The hit up the left field line drove in sophomore Kaylah Hampton, who walked and went to third on a sacrifice bunt and ground out. Senior Mary Gooding followed with a two-out walk, but the Boilermakers could not add to the lead.
Harrison led off the sixth with a single to right center. Junior Katie Johnson pinch ran for her at first, but was left stranded by two strikeouts and a pop up.
Nebraska knotted it up at 2-2 with a single, a sacrifice bunt and RBI double in the sixth. A pop up and ground out kept the Huskers from taking the lead.
Sophomore Maya Hughes reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and went to second on a sacrifice in the seventh, but a caught foul ball brought the Huskers to the plate.
A single and a fielder's choice put two on in the Nebraska eighth, but a caught foul and pop up sent the game to extra innings.
The Boilermakers went up 4-2 care of two RBI single by Stewart in the eighth. Kenny reached on an error to start the inning and went to third on a double by Harrison. Kenny and pinch runner Maddie Damon scored on the Stewart single up the right field line.
The Huskers got one run in the bottom of the eighth, but could not complete the comeback. A trio of one-out singles loaded the bases. An illegal pitch by Snyder allowed a score, but she forced the fly out double play to get out of the jam and end the game.
Nebraska 8, Purdue 0
Purdue managed just a leadoff walk in the second inning as Nebraska's Kaylan Jablonski (7-5) threw a complete-game no-hitter. Sophomore Gina Snyder (5-6) struck out two in two innings of work, while freshman Maddie Damon struck out one in two innings of relief.
Purdue had its lone base runner as senior Katie Harrison drew a leadoff walk in the second. Pinch runner Katie Johnson went to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch, but a strikeout erased the threat.
The Huskers got four runs in the first three innings on a pair of home runs by MJ Knighten. A solo shot in the first and a three-run shot in the third gave Nebraska a 4-0 lead.
Nebraska added four runs on five hits and an error in the fourth to close out the win. A leadoff single and a walk set the table for an RBI single. A bases loaded single added another score. A single and a throwing error accounted for the final two runs.
The Boilermakers went down in order on two strikeouts and a line out in the fifth to wrap up the game.
