TAMPA, Fla. ââ'¬" The Boilermakers had their offensive chances, but could not break through in a pair of losses on Day 1 of the Under Armour Invitational. Texas State edged the team 2-1 in an eight-inning pitchers' duel, while USF used a five-run third inning to secure a 5-0 win in the night cap.
Senior Lilly Fecho struck out nine Bobcats in Game 1, while freshman Maddie Damon added eight K's in Game 2.
The Boilermaker offense managed a run on nine hits, including a three-hit effort by senior Mary Gooding and a two-hit day by freshman Mallory Baker.
Purdue returns to action at 10 a.m. ET vs. College of Charleston at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The Boilermakers also are slated for an afternoon contest against Seton Hall.
Texas State 2, Purdue 1 (8 innings)
Randi Rupp (10-3) struck out 13 in the complete-game victory for Texas State. Senior Lilly Fecho (7-3) struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits in the loss for the Boilermakers.
Purdue scored its one run on five hits, including three by senior Mary Gooding. Junior Kristen Hoppman and freshman Heather Knight accounted for the other two.
Texas State put two on in the first with a pair of walks, but Fecho and the defense held with a fly ball and two strikeouts.
Hoppman tallied Purdue's first hit with a one-out bunt single in the second inning. She promptly swiped second base, but the Boilermakers were unable to capitalize on the RBI chance.
The Boilermakers threatened again in the third, putting runners at the corners on a strike three wild pitch to senior CJ Parsons and a single to shallow center by senior Mary Gooding, but could not break the scoreless tie.
The Bobcats put a runner on third in the sixth after a leadoff walk and sacrifice, but a grounder to the pitcher and strikeout capped the stanza.
Gooding sent a one-out single up the first base line in the bottom of the inning, stole second and went to third on a ground ball, but another ground ball kept her from scoring.
Texas State scored two runs on a hit and an error in the eighth under international tie breaker rule. A triple by Bianca Prado scored the runner who started the inning on second base. Prado came home on a dropped fly ball in left center. A double play brought the Boilermakers to the plate.
Parsons was placed on second in the home half of the eighth and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Gooding. A deep fly ball ended the game.
USF 5, Purdue 0
The Boilermakers left seven runners on base and allowed USF a third-inning rally in a 5-0 loss to the Bulls to wrap up Day 1 of the Under Armour Invitational.
Purdue tallied four hits in the game, two by freshman Mallory Baker, while allowing USF five runs on seven hits and an error.
Erica Nunn (4-4) struck out just four Boilermakers in the winning effort, while Susan Wysocki recorded the final two outs for the Bulls. Freshman Maddie Damon (2-3) struck out eight batters in the complete-game effort for Purdue.
Senior Katie Harrison was hit by a pitch and Baker added a single to the shortstop to put two on for the Boilermakers in the first. A hard liner back at the pitcher, however, ended the inning.
Purdue looked to have taken a 1-0 lead on a second-inning, two-out single by junior Kristen Hoppman, but senior Paris Andrew was called out in a controversial play at the plate. Andrew had reached on an error and was joined on base by freshman Heather Knight, who walked. Hoppman then laced the single through the right side, before the call ended the inning.
USF scored five runs in the third with three singles, a double and a two-run home run.
Freshman Lauren Stewart led off the fourth with a hit, but a double play and strikeout kept Purdue from snapping the shutout.
The Bulls put a runner on third in the fifth after a single, a wild pitch and fly out, but a looking strikeout kept the score at 5-0.
Baker added another hit with a two-out single in the sixth, but a fielder's choice play at second wrapped up the stanza.
A pair of walks to Knight and sophomore Morgan Cavinder coupled with a wild pitch gave Purdue two runners in scoring position in the seventh, but a pop up to the pitcher ended the Boilermakers' final rally attempt.
