STOCKTON, Calif. ââ'¬" The Boilermakers played two close contests on Saturday, falling to Cal Poly 5-3 and topping host Pacific 3-1.
Senior Katie Harrison led the Purdue bats with four hits on the day, including a home run, while freshman Lauren Stewart added three, including a long ball, and senior Mary Gooding posted two hits.
All four Boilermaker pitchers saw action. Freshman Maddie Damon (2-2), sophomore Gina Snyder and junior Katie Johnson combined for five strikeouts against Cal Poly. Senior Lilly Fecho (6-2) picked up her sixth win of the season in a complete-game victory in the night cap against Pacific.
The Boilermakers (8-5) wrap up the weekend with a noon ET Sunday contest against Cal State Bakersfield.
Cal Poly 5, Purdue 3
Cal Poly scored in the first inning and added two more runs in the third and the fifth, while holding off a late Boilermaker rally for the win.
The Mustangs scored five runs on six hits and two errors, while allowing Purdue three runs on seven hits and an error. Freshman Lauren Stewart led the Boilermaker bats with a 2-for-4 effort, including a home run.
Lindsey Chalmers (4-2) earned the victory for Cal Poly, while Sierra Hyland picked up the save. Freshman Maddie Damon struck out two in the loss, allowing three runs in two and two thirds innings. Sophomore Gina Snyder added two more K's in an inning and two thirds, while junior Katie Johnson finished off the game, holding the Mustangs hitless and issuing one strikeout.
A walk, a sacrifice and a single to left field put Cal Poly on the board in the first.
Senior Katie Harrison tallied a two-out single in the bottom of the inning, but the Boilermakers could not tie it up.
The Mustangs added two runs on four hits and an error in the third. A two-out solo home run by Amanda Sandoval got things started. A fielding error and two singles accounted for the second score. A hit by pitch loaded the bases, but a strikeout prevented further damage.
Stewart got one run back with a two-out home run to right center in the bottom of the third. Senior Mary Gooding followed with a single and went to second on a passed ball, but could not make it home.
Senior Paris Andrew singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball, but a ground ball to third base kept her from scoring.
Two hit batsmen and a single filled the bases for the Mustangs in the fifth. A throwing error allowed two runs to score, before a pop up ended the stanza.
Purdue tacked on two runs with a three-hit fifth. Sophomore Maya Hughes and Stewart got things started with one-out singles. The pair pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Harrison was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Mallory Baker plated Hughes and Stewart with a single to left field. She went to second on the throw home and Harrison went to third on the play. Hyland took over in the circle for Cal Poly and issued a strikeout to end the inning.
The Boilermakers threatened in the bottom of the seventh but could not complete the comeback. Gooding was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch. A dropped fly ball by the left fielder put Harrison on and moved Gooding to third, but two strikeouts wrapped the game.
Purdue 3, Pacific 1
Senior Lilly Fecho issued nine strikeouts and senior Katie Harrison went 3-for-4 with a home run in a 3-1 win over Pacific Saturday night.
Fecho moved to 6-2 with the complete-game victory, giving up just one run on six hits and an error. Kenya Lindstrom (1-2) took the loss for Pacific, giving up all three runs in the first four innings.
Purdue scored its three runs on seven hits and an error, as five different players tallied hits in the contest.
Harrison posted the game's first hit with a first-inning single and freshman Mallory Baker was hit by a pitch in the inning, but the Boilermakers could not push a run across.
Freshman Heather Knight put Purdue on the board in the second stanza, lifting a solo home run up the left field line, for her first long ball of the season.
Harrison made it 2-0 with a solo shot of her own in the third. Junior Kristen Hoppman bounced a two-out single off the third base bag, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior Paris Andrew joined her on base with a walk. The pair then pulled off the double steal to make it 3-0.
Purdue threatened in the fifth as Gooding singled and Harrison doubled, but a fielder's choice play at the plate and infield grounder kept it at 3-0.
Pacific put two on in the fifth with a hit by pitch and walk, but the defense held. The Tigers broke the shutout, however, in the sixth as Nicole Zapotoczny led off with a home run.
A single, a walk and an error loaded the bases for the Tigers in the seventh, but the Boilermakers got a fielder's choice play at the plate, a strikeout and a fly out to hold off the Pacific rally.
