RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The 19th-ranked Purdue women's golf team sits tied for 11th place after the first day of the 2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Boilermakers shot 14-over, 302, along with fellow Big Ten teams Maryland and Michigan, and are 19 shots off the lead set by Texas Tech and Georgia at five-under, 283.

Purdue was solid on the par-3's, posting the second-best score at two-under par, but had the worst score in the field on par-4's at 27-over and finished one-over par on the par-5's. The Boilermakers made only nine birdies as a team, but were tied with Arkansas for the third-most pars, sinking 57.

Junior August Kim and sophomore Linn Andersson posted the top-two scores of the day for the Old Gold and Black, coming in at two-over, 74, for the afternoon. Andersson made a team-high three birdies on the afternoon, while Kim made a pair. Sophomore Marta Martin was solid through the majority of the round, heading into her final hole of the day at one-over par, but finished up with a triple-bogey on the par-4, No. 2, to finish up four-over par, 78. Senior Anna Appert Lund had the final team score of the day at six-over, 78, while freshman Covadonga Sanjuan had a solid collegiate debut as an individual, scoring a three-over, 75, with a pair of birdies.

Georgia and Texas Tech share a six-shot cushion on the field, setting the opening-round record for the event, and breaking Duke's mark of three-under 285 set in 2004. Arkansas is third at one-over, 289, while North Carolina State and Northwestern are fourth at two-over, 290. Texas Tech's Gabby Barker has the individual lead at six-under, 66, becoming the fifth player to match the best-ever opening round for an individual, while North Carolina State's Rachael Taylor is one shot back at five-under, 67.
