Kansas Relays Champion Quotes | Kansas Relays ResultsÂ
LAWRENCE, Kan./WALNUT, Calif. -Â The Boilermakers had another huge weekend on the track and in the field at the Kansas Relays and Mt. SAC Relays. The Boilermakers broke a pair of school records, one at each meet. The Kansas Relays were compacted into one day, as Saturday's events were cancelled due to forecasts that call for storms.
Matthew McClintock was first to break a school record. The junior finally took down the last of the four longest race records for indoor and outdoor seasons. McClintock ran a 15-second personal record in the 10,000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays to win with a time of 28:54.77. He is the first Boilermaker to ever run a 10k in under 29 minutes, breaking Donnie Fellows record of 29:02.85. McClintock now holds the 5k and 10k outdoor school records, 3k and 5k indoor records and numerous cross country records. His time ranks 16th in the country.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi broke the hammer throw Nigerian and school record for the second straight week. The junior broke the 69-meter mark for the first time in his career at the Kansas Relays, as he recorded a mark of 69.57m (228-3). That distance ranks fifth in the country. Enekwechi also won the shot put for the second straight week. He recorded a distance of 19.19m (62-11.50).
The men's jumpers had their best meet of the season. Tyler Askew led the way in the long jump with a winning mark of 7.59m (24-11.00). He was in third going into his final attempt when he leapt the winning distance. His mark is just one centimeter shy of his PR distance from last week.
"Honestly, I never had this many legal jumps in one competition," Askew said. "Five of my six jumps were legal so this is one of my best series as far as how my approach worked. I'm just trying to get better for regionals and nationals. I just need to continue to keep faith in myself, God and my coach and let my teammates continue to motivate me. I like to win and that's what I came out here to do today. It was even better that I got the win on my last jump."
Anaquan Peterson had a good day jumping as well. He took third in the long jump with a distance of 7.53m (24-8.50) and a tailwind of 2.6 meters per second. His mark ranks 22nd in the country. In the triple jump, Peterson won with a mark of 15.55m (51-0.25). That distance ranks 24th in the country.
"I feel pretty good, but I'm glad it's over," Peterson said. "I'm looking forward to another great relays (Drake Relays) next weekend. I'm just going to try to put my jumps together better because I didn't have a great series. I was jumping pretty badly in the prelims, but I put it together at the end so I'm happy."
Byron Ferrell had his best day as a Boilermaker to date. The senior pole vaulter was victorious after clearing 5.21m (17-1). Ferrell had a good series, clearing his three bars all on his first attempts at each height. In the end, it took a jump off, but Ferrell was victorious. His mark ranks 37th in the country.
"I am pretty excited about the victory," Ferrell said. "Kansas and Kansas State have some good guys jumping here. Even though it was a tiebreaker and we jumped the same height, I am still excited I got the win. This is not my best jumping yet, so this lets me know I'm in a good spot and I've still got more to come."
The Boilermakers had a handful of other winners. Vanessa McLeod ran her best 800m time of the season, winning in 2:08.06. Her time ranks 40th in the country. The women's 4x100m relay team was also a winner. The team of Savannah Carson, Carmiesha Cox, Devynne Charlton and Autumn Heath won with a time of 45.12 seconds. The women's 4x400m relay team also was victorious. Taylor Dunlap, Cox, Symone Black and Brionna Thomas ran a time of 3:36.27 to win by almost nine seconds. The time is just off the school record which was run last year.
Elsewhere, Jacqueline Williams had an outdoor PR in the pole vault where she took third. Williams cleared 4.00m (13-1.50) on her first attempt after two other clean clearances. Williams' mark is tied for sixth in school history. Jessica Harter finished sixth in the event after clearing 3.90m (12-9.50).
Charlton was runner-up in the 100m hurdles. She ran a time of 13.71 seconds into a wind of 0.2 meters per second. She also finished seventh in the 100m dash, after crossing the finish line in 11.82 seconds. Cox took fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.78 seconds. Her time was just 0.01 of a second off her PR. Black was second in the 400m hurdles and the top collegian. She finished with a time of 59.03 seconds. The men's 4x400m relay team also finished second. The team of Nicholas Parks, Obokhare Ikpefan, Kendal Frederick and Moussa Conde finished in 3:09.96 seconds.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Hope Schmelzle and Katie Hoevet were within hundredths of seconds of their PRs. Schmelzle finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:23.64. Hoevet took eighth in her 1,500m race. She finished in 4:23.98. Tate Schienbein had a PR and won his steeplechase race. He finished in 8:53.11, which ranks fourth in school history.
