UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 50 Penn State handed the Purdue men's tennis team a 6-1 setback Friday at the Sarni Tennis Center. The loss brought the Boilermakers to 4-15, 0-7 B1G on the season, while the Nittany Lions improved to 12-13, 3-5 B1G.
PSU won the doubles point by taking Nos. 3, followed by No. 2. The Nittany Lion duo of Christian Lutschaunig and Leonard Stakhovsky gained the early advantage in the doubles battle with an 8-4 match over Purdue's Matt Bouggy and Lucas Dages.
Not long after, Penn State's tandem of Matt Barry and Michael Reilly secured the doubles point with a win at the No. 2 spot over the Old Gold & Black's combo of Arthur Dobradin and Mateus Silva, 8-5.
The Nittany Lions carried their momentum from doubles into singles, opening with a win at No. 4 from Tomas Hanzlik, who defeated Dobradin, 6-2, 6-3.
Diego Acosta got the Boilermakers on the board with a straight-set victory at the top of the lineup. The senior disposed of Alex Fennell, 6-3, 6-4, to pick up his team-best eighth singles win of the season.
A third set was forced by Ricky Medinilla at the No. 2 spot, but the sophomore fell to PSU's only ranked player in No. 111 Leonard Stakhovsky, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Purdue men's tennis team will be back in action Sunday at 11th-ranked Ohio State. Play from the Varsity Tennis Courts in Columbus, Ohio, is slated to get underway at 12 p.m. ET.
