KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After waiting more than two hours to play due to tournament delays, the Boilermakers made quick work of Indiana State, wrapping up an 8-0 run-rule victory in just an hour and 12 minutes.
Purdue racked up its eight runs on 12 hits and two Sycamore errors, while ISU managed one hit, a first-inning double erased by a caught stealing call. Freshman Maya Hughes led the Boilermaker bats with a 3-for-4 effort, while juniors Paris Andrew and Lexi Valone and sophomore Kristen Hoppman posted two hits apiece.
Junior Lilly Fecho (9-2) faced just 15 batters in the five-inning victory, including two strikeouts. Yvette Alvarez threw the complete game for Indiana State.
The Boilers threatened, putting runners on the corners in the first, but could not score. Senior Alyssa Koorsen posted Purdue's first hit with a one-out double off the left field wall. A ground ball to the pitcher pushed Koorsen to third. Redshirt junior Katie Harrison drew a two-out walk, but a fly ball to right ended the inning.
Purdue made good on a pair of RBI opportunities in the third, going up 2-0 with help from three hits. Valone led off the inning with a single to the right center gap. Hughes joined her with a bunt single and the pair moved into scoring position care of a Koorsen sacrifice bunt. A ground ball to second base by senior Ashley Burkhardt drove in the first run. Harrison followed with a double to right center to bring Hughes home from third. A ground ball to the pitcher kept Purdue from adding more.
The Boilermakers poured on four runs on four hits and two Sycamore miscues in the fourth. Hoppman got things rolling with a triple up the right field line, and promptly scored on an RBI single up the middle by Andrew. The Boilers soon had runners at the corners as Andrew advanced to third on an errant throw of a failed pickoff attempt and a steal as junior Mary Gooding walked. Valone brought Andrew in to score on a double to left center. A Hughes single and a fielder's choice play at the plate loaded the bases. A fielder's choice play at second base led to an errant throw and two Boiler scores. A ground ball to the pitcher capped the inning.
Purdue wrapped up a run-rule victory with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Hoppman and Andrew set the table for Gooding's RBI single down the left field line. Valone reached on a fielder's choice that saw everyone safe. Hughes then poked an infield single in front of second base to bring home Andrew and end the game at 8-0.
The Boilers (11-5) return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday against North Dakota State and wrap up Day 2 of the Tennessee Invitational with a 4:45 p.m. ET game against Northern Iowa.
