MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Boilermakers had a good day at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday. The teams qualified for several finals and added names to the program all-time lists.
The Bahamian duo of Carmiesha Cox and Devynne Charlton seems to have picked up where it left off after the indoor season. Cox was second in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 11.81 seconds, a new personal best and the third-fastest wind-legal time in program history. She ran into a headwind of 0.3 meters per second. Charlton was third in the preliminaries with a time of 11.85 seconds, a new wind-legal personal record and the fourth-fastest wind-legal time in program history. Savannah Carson also qualified for the 100m dash finals as she took sixth. Her time was 11.95 seconds and she ran with a tailwind of 1.1 meters per second.
The women's distance group had a good opening race as well. The Boilermakers went 1-2-3 in the 5,000-meter run, with freshman Kendall Hacker crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:58.10. Katie Hoevet was second with a time of 17:07.30 and Gabrielle Broschard was third in 17:23.92.
The women qualified a pair for the 100m hurdles finals Friday. Cierra Brown finished fourth in the prelims, while Shantyra Delaney was fifth. Their times were 14.27 and 14.38 seconds, respectively, each with a wind of less than +1.0. The women's 4x200m relay team scored at the meet with a second place finish. The team of Cox, Charlton, Carson and Autumn Heath ran a time of 1:37.17.
Micaela Hazelwood started her outdoor career in the hammer throw pretty well. She took fifth with a throw of 52.05m (170-9). Kayla Zink, Elizabeth Iversen and Alisha Bahler were right behind her with sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively. All three were over 156 feet.
On the men's side, Matthew McClintock won the 5k race. He ran a time of 14:47.84 to win by nearly a second. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi took second in the weight throw, which was contested Thursday. He opened his season with a mark of 64.75m (212-5).
The Boilermakers will be busy Saturday with 53 entrants on the meet's final day. Aside from the women's 100m and 100m hurdles finals, Justin Veteto qualified for the men's 110m hurdles finals with a time of 14.48 seconds in his first career outdoor race. Other Purdue-heavy events include the men's and women's mile, men's and women's discus, men's and women's shot put and the men's and women's 400m dash. Aarin Jones will be among the top Boilermakers in the women's 400m. Symone Black will get her first crack at the 400m hurdles.
