WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 25th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team downed No. 45 Indiana, 6-1, Friday playing on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. For the eighth time this season, the Boilermakers captured the doubles point and took five of six singles matches to push their record to 8-2, 3-0 B1G and extended their winning streak to six. The Hoosiers' moved to 9-4, 0-1 B1G with the loss.
"This was a good win," head women's tennis coach Laura Glitz said. "I thought our energy was really good from beginning to end and I think was important because last year when we played at IU we were flat, so to me, that's the most important thing. They came out right away in doubles and it carried over into singles."
The Boilermakers gained the early momentum by winning the doubles point, doing so in their sixth-consecutive dual match.
At No. 1, the 43rd-ranked duo of Daniela Vidal and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum set the table by rolling past Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek, 8-2. The veteran duo pushed their record to 11-2 while winning their sixth straight.
An 8-4 performance at No. 2 by Lynda Xepoleas and Natalia Davila over Hoosier duo Kim Schmider and Alecia Kauss secured the point for Purdue. The senior/sophomore tandem lifted their record to 5-1 with all of their matches played at No. 2.
Consecutive singles victories at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 propelled the Boilermakers past Indiana. Bernard-Feigenbaum (10-2) registered her eighth straight-set victory, making quick work of Kauss, 6-4, 6-0. Nicole Robinson's spotless record remained intact by disposing of Paula Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-4. The sophomore hailing from West Palm Beach, Florida, owns a record of 6-0 with her last three wins coming in the No. 4 slot.
The dual was clinched with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 showing from Krisztina Kapitany over Carolyn Chupa. It was the junior's sixth-straight win while moving to 7-2 on the season.
"They all played well," Glitz said. "I thought Dani and Tess did a great job in their doubles spot and then Tess did a good job in singles getting done quickly. Nicole, Tess and Krisztina did a good job of getting up and staying up."
The final two points came in the third set at Nos. 1 and 3. After dropping the opening set to Klyczek, 6-3, Vidal rallied with back-to-back 6-1 sets to pick up her 10th win. Xepoleas took a back-and-forth match from Shannon Murdy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, en route to her eighth-straight victory.
The Boilermakers will spend their spring break in Las Vegas, Nevada. While in the desert, they will play a pair of dual matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. Purdue is set to take on the Rebels March 19 and No. 58 Columbia on March 20. Both dual matches are scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start.
