CHICAGO - DePaul dealt the Purdue men's tennis team a 5-2 loss Friday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness. The loss drops the 51st-ranked (tie) Boilermakers to 2-5, 0-1 B1G on the season, while the Blue Demons improved to 6-2 in their first win over a ranked opponent in 2015.
The Old Gold & Black switched up their Nos. 1 and 2 tandems, but DePaul captured the doubles point by taking Nos. 1 and 3. Blue Demon duo David Vieyra and Jan-Willem Feilzer topped Diego Acosta and Arthur Dobradin in the No. 1 slot, 6-3. Nathan de Veer and Alex Galoustian handed Lucas Dages and Renan Hanayama a 6-4 setback for their first loss of the season.
Acosta and 122nd-ranked Ricky Medinilla were each in back-and-forth battles and prevailed at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to provide Purdue with its two points in the dual. Acosta's 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (7) match over Sten Leusink was his second-straight victory and his first playing in the top spot. The senior improved to 4-1 in his final campaign.
At No. 2, Medinilla brought his three-match losing streak to an end by taking a three-setter from Vieyra, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. With the win, the sophomore evened his mark at 3-3.
Friday's win is just the fifth for the Blue Demons in 15 all-time meetings with Purdue and they took a 2-1 edge in the series when playing on their home courts. The 2-5 start for the Boilermakers is the first since 1993.
Purdue continues on the road in non-conference action, playing at No. T-10 Baylor on Feb. 20. Action from Waco, Texas, is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. ET.
