WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team had a five-game win streak snapped on Thursday as they fell to visiting Minnesota in Mackey Arena, 81-68. The Golden Gophers won their eighth straight, improving to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play behind 21 points, 19 rebounds, five blocks and four assists from sophomore standout Amanda Zahui B.
Minnesota used outstanding transition offense and a tough inside game to prevail on Thursday, outscoring the Boilermakers in the paint, 48-24. The Minnesota zone led to a season-high 21 three-point attempts from the Boilermakers, but the Old Gold and Black only cashed in five of those shots, leading to a 37.9 shooting percentage (25-66) for the day. The Golden Gophers outrebounded Purdue, 42-33, and knocked down 18-of-21 at the free throw line, marking just the second time this season an opponent has made more free throws than the Boilermakers.
The two bright spots for the Boilermakers were their ball security and solid performances by senior Whitney Bays and sophomore Ashley Morrissette. Purdue assisted on 22 of its 25 field goals for the day, while committing a season-low nine turnovers. Bays tied a Purdue record with her fourth straight double-double, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Morrissette had 15 points and a career-high seven assists. Junior April Wilson finished with eight points and six assists, while classmate Torrie Thornton scored a career-high nine points alongside six rebounds and three steals.
The Boilermakers continue Big Ten Conference play on Sunday, hosting archrival Indiana at 2 p.m. in Mackey Arena. The Hoosiers are 11-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play after beating No. 24 Michigan State on Wednesday, 70-51.
