WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams begin the spring semester portion of their schedules with the first home co-ed meet since mid-October, hosting Michigan State for a unique three-day dual that will feature four sessions of action.

Races begin with two relay events Thursday at 6 p.m. Diving is set for Friday at 11 a.m. and the swimmers will race again at 6 p.m. Friday. The standard 14-event swimming dual format rounds out the action Saturday at noon.

Over the course of the four sessions, 19 of the 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA Championships will be featured (all but platform diving and the 1650 freestyle). Additionally, the non-traditional 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke are on the schedule for Friday. The 1000 freestyle will be featured instead of the mile Saturday. The 400 IM is the final individual event Friday.

The format of the three-day meet was setup in part to mirror the Big Ten Championships, which opens with the 200 medley and 800 free relays on Wednesday night. All events will be scored this week against Michigan State.

The Boilermakers are wrapping up their winter training program this week and begin spring semester classes on Monday. After traveling to Boca Raton, Fla., and Honolulu for winter training trips the last two years, respectively, Purdue stayed home and trained at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center this year.

The Purdue swimmers have not competed since the weekend of Nov. 20-23. Selected divers were in action last the week of Dec. 16-21 at the USA Diving Winter Nationals. The last home meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center was a Nov. 7 men's dual against Western Kentucky. The Oct. 18 Indiana Intercollegiates marked the last time the men and women competed together at home.

The Purdue men will get a boost this week as sophomore Austin Flager returns to the active roster. He established a new Purdue freshman record in the 50 free and qualified for the NCAA Championships with the freestyle relay teams a year ago, but was ineligible during the fall semester this season.

Meanwhile, the No. 19 Purdue women will be looking to build on their victory at the five-team Ohio State Invitational in November. It marked the first time the women won a multi-team invitational meet on the road since November 2004 at North Carolina. The Purdue men were ranked 22nd in the Nov. 25 CSCAA Top 25, but slipped back to the receiving votes section of the biweekly poll after the invitational meets portion of the season around the country wrapped up in mid-December.

In dual meet action this season, the Purdue men are 3-0 and the women 3-1.

The Purdue divers have not competed separate from their swimming counterparts at home since the Boilermaker Aquatic Center last hosted the NCAA Zone C Championships in March 2013. With just the springboard events on tap this weekend, head diving coach Adam Soldati said his Boilers were likely to compete again from the platform towers in the Jan. 24 dual against Indiana as well as the Big Ten Triple Duals in Minneapolis the final weekend of January.

Dating back to the 1980-81 season, the Purdue and Michigan State women have competed in a head-to-head dual meet every season but two (1996-97 and 2002-03). The Boilermakers have not lost to MSU since 1987-88. The Spartans have also been a regular head-to-head opponent on the Purdue men's schedule over the last 40 years.

Among active Boilers, Jamie Bissett (1- and 3-meter diving), Lyam Dias (100 and 200 breast) and Meagan Lim (100 and 200 fly) each won multiple events against Michigan State last season. Filip Bujoczek (200 free), Manuel Gutierrez (500 free), Guillermo Blanco (100 back), Josh Ehrman (200 IM), Nika Karlina Petric (200 free), Grace Hernandez (500 free), Allie Davis (1000 free), Kylie Vogel (100 back), Hannah Manger (200 back) and Francesca Marr (200 breast) were also victorious in a race.
