"While we didn't finish the way we wanted, we got some good stuff from this weekend to build on," said Purdue head coach Devon Brouse. "It was great to see August Kim battle from behind both days and come out with victories. She competed in match play this summer and it showed as she was ready for this style of competition."
Kim rallied from being down three holes at the turn, winning five of the last eight holes to earn a 2&1 victory over Miami's Kailey Walsh. The pair traded the first four holes before Walsh took three in a row at No. 14, 15 and 16 to take a sizable lead at the break. Kim came on strong as they went to the front nine, taking No. 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 to seal the match and finish with her second win of the tournament.
Martin went back-and-forth with Miami's Daniela Darquea and needed extra holes to secure a one-up victory for the Boilermakers' other win. After Martin took the lead on No. 12, Darquea secured points on No. 14 and 16 to head to the turn with the lead. Martin regained her advantage with wins at No. 2 and 3, to go up one, but Darquea squared things up at No. 6 and took a one-hole lead with just one to play at No. 8. Martin finished strong, sending the match to extra holes with a win on No. 9 and finished the victory with a decisive 19th hole.
With freshman Linn Andersson falling to Miami's Delfina Acosta, 5&4, and senior Aurora Kan suffering a 5&3 loss to Leticia Ras-Anderica, Purdue junior Anna Appert Lund had the final opportunity to get a win for the Boilermakers. She fell behind early to Miami's Christina Ocampo, dropping holes on No. 10 and 14, but knotted the score with back-to-back win on No. 15 and 16. Ocampo took a lead to the turn with a par on No. 17, but Appert Lund quickly squared things up with a par of her own on No. 2. The match was decided on No. 3 and 5 as Ocampo took both holes and Appert Lund was unable to answer over the final four holes.
The Boilermakers will take this weekend off, and return to action Monday, Oct. 6 at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Northwestern University at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
