Appert Lund came out strong in the morning, scoring a birdie on the first official hole of the season en route to her first under-par round as a Boilermaker. She went right back to even with a bogey on No. 2 before carding 10 consecutive pars to sit even with six holes to play. Back-to-back birdies had her tied for the tournament lead, but a bogey on No. 16 left her one-under, where she would finish the round.
The second round started with four straight pars, but Appert Lund stumbled a bit at No. 5 and 6, scoring consecutive bogeys to go over par for the first time in the tournament. She went back-and-forth the rest of the day with birdies on No. 8 and No. 16, but bogeys on No. 10 and 15 to finish with a second-round 74.
Senior Aurora Kan had the Boilermakers' other score under-par on the day, shooting a one-under, 71 in the second round and finishing at four-over par, 77-71=148, and tied for eighth heading into tomorrow. After playing even after 13 holes in the morning, Kan faltered down the stretch with five straight bogeys and a five-over par, 77. However she came back strong in the second round, scoring a trio of birdies, including two on the back-nine, and was one of just three players to finish under-par in the second-18.
Fellow senior Johanna Tillström had a similar day to Kan, struggling in the first round before posting an even-par, 72 in the second round. Sitting tied for 20th place overall with a score of 79-72=151, she posted par on 16 of 18 holes in the second round, shooting just one birdie and one bogey. Tillström had two birdies in the morning round as well.
The final Boilermaker team scores from freshman Marta Martin in her collegiate debut. Martin finished 12-over par, 81-75=156 on the day, but showed flashes of excellence in her career-opener. After failing to post a birdie in her first 17 holes of the day she closed her first collegiate round with a bang, holing out on No. 18 with an eagle, the Boilermakers' first of the year. She carried the momentum into the second-18 of the day, shooting a pair of birdies over the first seven holes and sinking a third on No. 11 en route to a three-over score of 75.
Sophomore August Kim struggled in the opener, finishing 17-over, 82-79=161, and not carding a team score.
East Carolina has a firm lead on the team score, sitting 19 shots ahead of the pack at five-over, 294-287=581. Pirate junior Frida Gustafsson Spang led the way with back-to-back, under-par rounds and sits six shots ahead of the field at nine-under, 69-66=135. Following the Boilermakers are Augusta State in third at 25-over, 300-301=601 and Kansas in fourth at 29-over, 302-303=605.
Play resumes tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (CT).
