FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team had a tough back nine to slip to a second-place tie after the third round of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship held at a very windy and challenging Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.
The Boilermakers totaled a 21-over par 309 to fall to a second-place tie with No. 9-ranked Illinois at 39-over par 903. The Boilermakers have recorded rounds of 298-296-309 for their 54-hole total. Minnesota, which was one shot off the lead after 36 holes on Friday, leads the tournament at 32-over par 896. The Golden Gophers recorded a tremendous round of 13-over par 301 during Saturday's third round.
Purdue's 309 was actually the sixth-best score of the day and just eight shots behind the Golden Gophers' 301, but Minnesota's round enabled the Gophers to surge to a seven-shot advantage heading into Sunday's final round.
The Boilermakers played very well early on the round, shooting a combined 3-over par after seven holes and leading by as many as seven shots midway through the round. However, the Purdue five played the last 11 holes in a combined 30-over par as strong winds wreaked havoc on the field late in the round.
The top three teams, Minnesota, Illinois and Purdue, played the last 11 holes (8 through 18) in a combined 71-over par between their 15 players.
Enzo Perez is pacing the Purdue squad this weekend, currently in a tie for sixth at 8-over par 224 (72-76-76). Perez recorded a big birdie on the par-5 18th, one of just four birdies on the back nine for the Purdue squad on Saturday, to move Purdue back to a tie for second place after 54 holes in the team race.
Stuart Macdonald recorded Purdue's best round of the day with a 3-over par 75 to sit in a 16th-place tie at 12-over par 228 (76-77-75). Macdonald was even-par after 15 holes on Saturday, but suffered bogeys on the last three holes to fall to 3-over for his round.
Philippe Schweizer is also in a tie for 16th at 12-over par 228 (72-72-84). The freshman from Switzerland was just two-over par through seven holes, but struggled down the stretch to fall off the pace. Schweizer was second in the medalist race after 36 holes.
Senior Adam Schenk is in a tie for 29th place at 15-over par 231 (79-75-77). Schenk was even-par after seven holes, but played the last 11 holes in five-over par to finish his round with a 77.
Freshman Austin Eoff is in a 36th-place tie at 16-over par 232 (78-73-81). Eoff, like many others, was even-par after seven holes, but bogeyed the last six holes to fall to 9-over par.
Minnesota freshman Jose Mendez leads the medalist race at even-par 216. Illinois' Charlie Danielson is second at 3-over par 219.
Purdue will be paired with Northwestern and will tee off on Sunday on hole No. 1, with tee times beginning at 8:40 a.m. (ET). Minnesota and Illinois will tee off at 9:20 a.m. (ET) off hole No. 1.
The Boilers are looking for their first Big Ten title since 1981.
