SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Purdue men's golf team struggled in the early and late part of the opening round of the NCAA Central Regional at Rich Harvest Farms, sitting in ninth place after 18 holes with a 21-over par 309.
The Boilermakers trail leader and 21st-ranked UAB by 17 shots, but are just seven shots out of fifth place, the cutline for teams trying to advance to the NCAA National Championship round next weekend.
UAB shot a 4-over par 292 to lead ninth-ranked Illinois by one shot. Clemson and Kent State are tied for third at 11-over par 299, while Jacksonville State and USC are tied for fifth at 14-over par 302. Fourth-ranked California is seventh at 17-over par 305, while 28th-ranked UNLV is eighth at 20-over par 308.
The teams struggled in tough scoring conditions, as showers fell intermittently during the morning and a cold, North wind blew most of the day to make conditions colder than the 50-degree high temperature on Thursday.
The Central regional was the only regional nationally where no teams shot even-par or better. Just two holes, both the par-5 second and par-5 seventh, played under par for the day and the scoring average for the field was at 78.07.
Purdue struggled out of the gates, with all five players playing the first six holes in a combined 16-over par. However, Purdue then righted the ship and played the next eight holes (7 through 14) in a combined 3-over par.
Purdue was still just 17-over par as a team when it reached the 18th hole, a 454-yard par-4 tester that ranked as the second-hardest hole during the day, playing 0.80 strokes above par on average.
The Boilers played the hole a combined 6-over par, which subsequently dropped Purdue from possibly being as high as seventh place to ninth place after round one.
Senior Adam Schenk is in a tie for 16th after shooting a 3-over par 75 in the opening round. Schenk was 2-over par after six holes and a double-bogey on the par-3 13th hole dropped him to 4-over par. However, he recorded a big birdie on the par-5 17th hole and was the only Purdue player to par the 18th hole to finish his day with a 75, just two shots out of sixth place.
Freshman Austin Eoff is in a 28th-place tie at 5-over par 77. Eoff was 4-over par after five holes, but then rattled off seven straight pars before back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 moved him to 2-over par for his round. However, Eoff bogeyed three of the final four holes to fall back to 5-over par for the day.
Junior Enzo Perez sits in a 33rd-place tie at 6-over par 78. Like Eoff, Perez was 5-over par after six holes, but a birdie on No. 7 changed momentum and he played the rest of the round in just 2-over par after recording pars on nine straight holes (9-17) sandwiched between bogeys on holes 8 and 18.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer and sophomore Stuart Macdonald are tied for 38th at 7-over par 79. Schweizer was just 1-over par after nine holes, but suffered double bogeys on holes 11 and 18 and fell back to 7-over par 79.
Macdonald was also just 2-over par after a birdie on hole No. 11, but back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 paired with a double-bogey on 18 dropped him also back to a 79.
Round two will get underway at 8 a.m. (CT) on Friday morning at Rich Harvest Farms. Purdue will be paired with No. 4-ranked California and No. 28-ranked UNLV, and will tee off hole No. 10.
