Boilers Top Dutch National Team 8-6

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Boilermaker softball team wrapped up its spring break stay in Florida with an 8-6 win over the Dutch National Team in an exhibition game on Wednesday.

Twenty players saw action in the game for the Boilers, including three pitchers. Nine players combined for the team's 11 hits, including two-hit efforts by sophomore CJ Parsons and freshman Kristen Hoppman.

Purdue scored its eight runs on 11 hits and three Netherlands miscues, while the Dutch managed six runs on six hits and five errors.

Junior Alex Whittemore picked up the win for the Boilers, tossing the last two innings. Junior Lexy Moore and senior Lauren Grant also saw time in the circle. The trio combined for seven strikeouts.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. The Dutch went up 4-2 in the second, but Purdue got one run back in the bottom of the inning. The Netherlands took a 5-3 lead in the fourth, but the Boilermakers took a 6-5 edge with a three-run fifth. After the Dutch tied it up in the top of the sixth, Purdue closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Whittemore registered two Ks in the seventh to close out the win.

The Boilermakers return to their regular season slate with a 6 p.m. Friday contest against Penn State in University Park, Pa. The game, the first in a three-game series, marks the beginning of the Big Ten Conference season.
